There have been "sails" of some sort on a vehicle or three since the inaugural event in 1987.

Saphir Faid replied: "Correct, more cars have tried to take advantage of the crosswinds. But never with an active mechanism that could deploy according to the conditions." Incorrect. Pumpkinseed in 1996 and Solarmotions in 2001 had "an active mechanism that could deploy according to the conditions".

Solar racing for 30+ years, solar E-bikes from France to China every year. Time should be ripe for a solar car to go around the world? Not as racy so heavier and slower and with little or no support crew? It would be marvelous!

There should be an oval track competition that combines some other technologies with a goal to a more realistic weather dynamic for the competition ."Solar plus" .At the oval track there would be wind turbines ,solar panels .A set amount assigned to each team .The goal to develop charge and use of batteries from renewable s .Trikes and cars would utilise the localised power being able to be produced at the venue .However the event would be held with whatever weather conditions for the day .This would develop the cars in a more realistic way and make way for a real world application .Nothing against this race except that it is in ideal conditions .These conditions do not help the daily commute . However this event coincides with an event at Bathurst which is far less interesting than this .
@laraleo64124 жыл бұрын
What makes you think that the race would take place in ideal conditions?

Is there an internationally available Solar Challenge news show with the latest preparations of the race and the individual teams? Of course, one could browse loads of social media pages in order to get an idea of the struggles the teams are dealing with. But it would be nice to easily gobble up the latest news flashes. For instance, team Eindhoven had its best solar panels damaged during transport. It took them three weeks to find the finances and support to fly in a replacement panel just a few days ago.

I remember they had daily video updates on the BWSC site in 2013, but consecutive editions of the event had not afaik. Unofficially, there is scientificgems.wordpress.com if you want to see it summarised without looking into the social media of individual teams. On reddit.com/r/solarracing there is likely going to be unofficial news as well. I hope this is helpful to you.

@@Peter1986C Thank you very much Peter. scientificgems.wordpress.com looks great. Tony does a marvellous job at gathering all kinds of gems! His submenu _Solar Racing_ > _WSC 2019_ is empty, but you can scroll down the regular homepage and watch updates and graphics covering at least the whole year of 2019. He updates the list of teams regularly and they include loads of links towards all kinds of social media, which makes navigating easy. And the latest news is summarized every now and then. Time to subscribe!
