Why the Earth does not fall into the Sun? If the Sun is applying a constant gravitational force, Earth should fall into the Sun. The explanation often given for this question is that the centrifugal force balances out the centripetal force, which is the gravitational force. But centrifugal force is not a real force it is just used for applying Newtonian mechanics to non-inertial frames, it is a pseudo or fictitious force. Still using centrifugal force makes the net force zero, then why there is acceleration (changing direction or circular motion)? Here we should use only one thing at a time, either use the concept of tangential velocity because of which centrifugal force is considered or use the centrifugal force because of which tangential velocity comes into the picture. The other explanation given is that if the Earth did not have the tangential velocity it would have fallen into the Sun but during the formation of the Solar System, the Earth gained some tangential velocity and this velocity is not letting the Earth fall into the Sun. But how? The explanation given for this “how” is that the Earth continuously misses the Sun because of its tangential velocity. But this is not giving a very intuitive way. Let’s get into mathematics to solve the problem. We know that the Earth always moves perpendicular to the direction of force applied by the Sun. Therefore we can say that the gravitational force cannot change the tangential velocity of Earth. But the question is why the radial component of the velocity of the Earth does not change. The acceleration of the Earth towards the Sun should be 0.006 m/s^2, radially. Within one hour the radial velocity of the Earth should be 21.6 m/s and within 24 hours it should be 518.4 m/s. After two months the radial velocity of the Earth should be 31.1 km/s which is more than the tangential velocity of the Earth. If we consider that the Earth was not revolving at the first place and just passing the Sun with its linear velocity then also the changes cannot be more, because there are far away planets which are revolving around the Sun. If we consider the angular momentum conservation which is L = m*r*v(tangential), then also if the r is decreasing because of radial acceleration towards the Sun, v can increase and that is not changing the fact the Earth should collide with the Sun. So the first question is why the Earth does not fall into the Sun and the second question is why we are not experiencing the acceleration due to the Sun just because its magnitude is small (0.006) or we just have the habit of experiencing this just like gravity. But gravity does not let us maintain our inertia because if we jump gravity will pull us down and will not let us maintain our speed of jumping.
