Great video! When I pull the drum off (3500k) axle, the drum is hard to pull off, almost like it is locked down or magnetized. Trailer is not connected to the truck. Would this be a warn drum/magnet or bad magnet? Other axles doesn't do that.

The one thing you didn't mention on this video is what your brake controller was set at and why. With that question in mind, What's your initial thought process/procedure to set the right gain on the controller for burnishing? I have to set a different gain setting for each trailer and the weight im hauling. Is there a general setting like 10 to 15 if everything is adjusted right and in good condition? Thanks

But on a tandem axle trailer (especially a heavy one) you can quickly get one tire off of the ground with the Trailer-Aid device and then replace broken springs a couple months later (after looking at the broken springs with a dumb look on your face that asks "how could that have happened"?).

I really like your content! I do have a question with my own trailer. I know it will be near impossible for you to comment but it may be something you have pearls of wisdom about. I am pulling a new nuCamp 320 with a 2022 Tacoma. I have installed a Redarc Tow Pro Liberty controller and have also had the unit replaced under warranty once. The problem is when I am coming to a stop. The LED indicators and braking action are normal when braking from highway speeds but as I come to a stop, the trailer brakes pulse on and off several times and yellow LED flashes. (The manual does not give any situation for this kind of event.) The brakes don't lock up, but increase in intensity quite a lot. It seems to happen after I've been driving for awhile and if I brake lightly it seems to not happen. I have already checked the adjustment on the Dexter electric brakes and those seem within normal range. Could this just be that I have the gain set a bit too high? Thanks in advance if you have an idea but understand if you can't comment. If you weren't so far away I'd definitely come in to your shop.

hey man I’m making a custom trailer right now and the brackets I’m using for the leaf spring hangers is a upside down trailer channel tongue I have four of them for each side so basically I can swap leaf springs so I can keep one trailer just get different axle setups so anyways the channel the big ones that are used for like big equipment like the 12,000 rated ones where you have to weld them so that’s my setup What I want to know is what’s the average distance from top of axle to frame I have a 30 eye to eye under slug axle mines being 4 inches seems to close afraid it may hit the frame on bumps

Hi, I have an 07 Silverado Classic 1500 with HD tow package(7-pin plug). I don't do a lot of pulling, but I have had to pull a double-axle a couple of times equipped with brakes. As far as I can tell, everything is pre-wired, just need to plug in to driver kick panel. Do I still need to run anything to fuse box, and what would your recommendation be for a controller?

Just bought a new to me 1448 Jon boat, 1988 Evinrude 9.9hp tiller, and a trailer. The hour plus drive home was sketchy at best, dirt roads and slow. Trailer rehab time. At a minimum, the trailer tires are shot, dry rot. I don't know squat about trailer tires which is why I am here. Thanks for the extremely informative/educational video. Knowledge is pretty cool when passed along by someone who nails the delivery spot on.

If you buy a new trailer inspect everything EVERYTHING BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE TRAILER SALES LOT. I didn't and when I returned to my shop from my first trip hauling my jeep I found a spring just hanging under the trailer. On inspection I found the spring perches just tack welded in place to the frame. I didn't crash, but it could have been horrible. I spent the afternoon under the hood finishing all the welds and then some.

Just finished converting a 22ft toy hauler into a camper, We plan on spending a lot of time on the beach soft Sand. The trailer is being pulled by a 2009 Hummer H2 SUT with air suspension. We are considering placing some wider LT rims and tires on the trailer, more than likely the same tire and rim combo as what we currently have on the hummer Trailer Spec: Custom trailer from Rock Solid. tandem 1400lbs spread axle. the trailers Max loaded weight will be no more than 9,000 lbs at any time, currently just over 7,000 lb with 160 gallons of fresh water. Rim: 20" Black Rhino ABRAMS Tires: MAXXIS RAZR MT LT275/65R20 Any advice and opinion would be appreciated we spent a lot of time researching and building every other aspect of our trailer but completely neglected tires until now.

I totally understand what you’re trying to achieve! There are several off-road camper style trailers on the market that use a tire set up like you’re wanting to do b/c they use them primarily in off-highway situations. I don’t disagree with that. They may be helpful if you will be in the sand a lot, just be sure to double check your load ratings to make sure they are sufficient for the weight you’re hauling.

@TheTrailerSmith thank you for the swift reply.. My trailer was shipped with 3500 lb tires. The ones that I'm looking at are 3800. I was concerned about the width of the tires shopping around I noticed that most trailer tires are narrow and figure there is a reason for that

Can you use composite lumber for a trailer floor?
@TheTrailerSmith
@TheTrailerSmith 9 күн бұрын
Absolutely you can! But often, when using composite lumber for home or trailer use, they have a minimum substructure support spacing and minimum screw requirement. That minimum would likely require more cross members and closer screw spacing.

The only place I get them from is in the brake pad kit. They can be installed without the bullet, if you take your time. The bullet has only been in use a few years. Or you can try buying the kit just for the bullet if you want to go that route.

I have a question for you. You made your marks and measured and then discovered that the problem was on the opposite side from where you at first assumed the problem existed. I would assume that the measurement on the side that was faulty was a larger number/longer distance than the side you started on. What is the logic involved? Do axles predominantly shift to the rear, which determined your repair strategy? You would think that an axle with damaged hangers might move forward as easily as they'd move backwards due to hard braking; or did the position of the spring U-bolts, which I assume were farther off center on the springs, cause you to determine that the side you worked on was the problem.
@TheTrailerSmith
@TheTrailerSmith 9 күн бұрын
The reason I thought it was on the right rear was because there was tire wear on the right rear. When we measured axle spacing, from axle to axle, it was off as well. We don’t always have a standard axle spacing number to go off of, especially on cargo trailers so our first thought was to look at the worn out tire. This is why it’s important to take the series of plum bob measurements which immediately showed us the left rear was the culprit. The measurement from the tongue to the front axle on each side was essentially equal. But the measurement from the tongue to the rear axle was off from one side to the other. Those rear axle measurements led to further investigation to what could cause it and to figure out if the axle was too far forward or too far backward. Measuring all the suspension components helped to determine what the proper placement of the axle should have been. It’s all of these measurements for proper placement, along with viewing the damage that helped to determine what the issue was. Ultimately, the whole rear axle was out of place on both sides-too far forward in the right and too far back on the left. After completing the repairs and speaking with the customer, they confirmed they had the tires off and didn’t put them back on in the original locations when they installed them. The worn tire indeed had been on the back left, before it got to my place, which further confirms the diagnosis.

Hence the emphasis on QUALITY ST tires. You can get cheap tires for any vehicle type. ST doesn't always equal cheap.......only if you buy the cheap ones. The key is to buy the tire that is designed for what you're putting it on. As stated in the video multiple times, LT (truck) tires are designed for trucks. Not trailers.
