Great info! Using the open map chest site and GMapTool's Linux version even looks good to keep updates going on Linux. Garmin's software has never supported Linux, but their webpage still claims to offer free map updates for their older devices (they've had "free lifetime map updates" for a long time now) but they do say a lot of devices don't have the storage space or SD card capacity available, so those devices are S.O.L. lol! Garmin is still amazing for keeping tons of their old devices basic software updated for so long, even without maps.

Thanks for this video, especially the lesson on the different type of UV lights. Super useful. Here is a “silly” question: I saw that Philips (and other brands) are selling “Sanitizer Boxes” (hermetically sealed stainless steel boxes (super reflective) that are basically designed to disinfect everyday objects with two built-in UV-C lamps (lamp wavelength: 253.7 nm). I was wondering whether such a box could - on the basis of repeated sessions - enable a retrobright effect ? I've read here and there that for a good retrobright effect you need to combine heat + UV, and this box does both, so I was wondering. And also, I've some old walkmans to restore but not all of them are in plastic : do you think it can work on metal shell or lacquered/metallic paints ? Thanks !
@TutorialGenius8 күн бұрын
I'm sure the box would work, given what I already covered in the video with regards to catalysts. For metal, I have no idea. I would guess not. I don't see why you wouldn't use some acetone or something on the metal though. That'll remove anything. There's no harm in trying if you already have the kit for other plastic objects.
@thewalkmangallery71288 күн бұрын
@@TutorialGenius It's because I have a metal model on which a sticker "it's a sony" stayed for a long time, and when you remove it you see a difference in color (the sticker acted as a stencil), so I'd like to make this “mark” disappear (I guess that the color below the sticker is the original one). Thank you for your thoughts on the box. I might give it a try then

It wasn't clear to me how you knew after the 3rd heating/cooling cycle that it "broke free"? Did you discover that by trying to turn it in between and, if so, how much torque did you use on the first, second, and third tries before getting it free? It would be good to see/understand these intermediate steps.
@TutorialGenius8 күн бұрын
To the point where if I applied more, the bleeder would start stripping, based on feel. I don't have an open ended torque wrench. IF you can repeat the process of heating and cooling, then there isn't much sense it pushing the torque to it's limit. Play it safe

@@TutorialGenius Thanks. It seems to be a bad compressor clutch. No one here only replaces the clutch. They want to replace the compressor, and then they say one needs to also to replace the condenser, evaporator, and dryer to warranty it. They all want $1400 bucks or more. I think I'll take on replacing the clutch myself. Kit is only $55.
@TutorialGenius8 күн бұрын
@@onjofilms Yeah it's super easy! I already have a video on replacing an AC clutch on my channel. If it's burnt out the system will be contaminated and you'll need to flush the system and replace all the service-manual-recommended major ac components. That's probably where the price tag comes into play.

Compressor kicks on with one can but if I try to add another to get it to spec it shuts off making it so it won't get to spec. Is it safe to try and bypass or am I doing something wrong

@redman754010 күн бұрын
@TutorialGenius yeah no I watched that part but either I wasn't paying full attention or our circumstances are just slightly different. See mine did turn on soon after starting on the first can but when I barely started on the second one it stopped. I don't think yours turned on at all which i figured in my case means I'm somehow overcharging it despite being way below spec
@TutorialGenius7 күн бұрын
@@redman7540 Force the compressor to run (Like I showed in the video), but the gauges attached, then you'll get an accurate psi reading to know if it's overcharged. If it's only one can, I doubt it's overcharged, but you're not gonna get an accurate reading when the system is not up and running. There is also a hot water trick, where you place the can in a bowl of water and it should pump the freon in the system. Somebody mentioned it in a little more detail in the comments section.

I am not quite convinced that you are right. In the Black Box, there are a total of four (4) x 2-ohm Elements. But it looked like you only measured one Element. I agree that the single Element would give you approx 79 Watts. But the Heat Output from that Black Box (all parallel - wired) should be 79 x 4 Watts = 316 Watts. The Red On/ Off switch could be changed to a 3 -position Switch, where you could switch some (or all) of the Elements to provide you with different Output Wattage combinations. When I watched your video, I was thinking that the contents of the Black Box would be a PTC arrangement - and not some ancient resistance-wire / mica all knocked together. I am not an electrician, but I have a basic understanding of electronic circuits / functions. Thanks for demonstrating just how the average guy can be ripped-off with shoddy equipment, made from chinesium, and being a little economical with the truth regarding the (claimed) 600W Heat Output. Greetings from Australia.
@TutorialGenius11 күн бұрын
Somebody already left a similar comment and I addressed it on the response to that. It didn't matter which configuration it was measured in, the resistance was the same (2ohms). Normally you would move the terminals, but this wasn't the case here sadly. I bought two units (in case one was faulty), but they gave the same output.
@peterduxbury92711 күн бұрын
@@TutorialGenius You had four (4) individual Heating Elements inside that Box. Each Individual Heating Element measured 2 Ohms. I would agree with you that the Heat Output from ONE single element would be 79 Watts. Your conclusion (at 16:30) was that the Power Output "was not even close" - at 79 Watts! I just cannot see how you can string four (4) Heating Elements in parallel (all consuming power) with your conclusion that it "was not even close". The total power consumption was less than the manufacturers' claim, of 400W, but my reckoning was that (with all four elements connected in a parallel circuit), the power being drawn was approx. 316 Watts. If I am wrong, then I need to go back to college.
@TutorialGenius10 күн бұрын
I mean you could string everything in parallel, but I'm not about to manually do that. It should be wired that way out of the box. Usually you just move the cables like I said in my last message @peterduxbury927

If the assembly has just been put together ALL the hoses and the manifold itself need to be purged of air. In the old days it was easy, just release a little system refrigerant back through the manifold and out the center port one side at a time. Now days the bureaucrats and enviro nazis have made it illegal to do that so you legally have to pull a vacuum on the set up to purge it. Pretty sure most people (including shop mechs) still just purge. But hey, it’s apparently “the law”.
@TutorialGenius14 күн бұрын
You can release a little bit for purging purposes, you just cannot empty a system into the atmosphere
@OpenCarryUSMC13 күн бұрын
@@TutorialGenius sure you CAN release a system into the atmosphere. It’s whether a) you should and b) is it legal. Big difference between “can”, “should”, and “illegal”. Just a pet peeve of mine when it comes to word use. Probably because of my minor in criminal Justice.
