How to those hooks Gamakatsu or Daiichi affect how the fly rides thru the water. Before you used up eye hooks to keep them riding level

Good question. The weight being concentrated in the front of the fly keeps it riding level.

Those Gamakatsu hooks look almost but not quite like circle hooks. Have you tested the saltwater Weamer tied on circle hook? I quite agree that shorter shanks with wider gapes are much more effective.

I used circle hooks briefly quite a few years ago, but with not enough action to form an opinion on them. I'd imagine that when swung they would work, but not when stripped.

What about swinging flies on a river with a sinking line? What length leader do you use? I often heard I should use a short 4-foot leader.

Typically 8' to 10' as my flies sink well.

Instead of the marabou can you just use craft fur

If you're fishing turbulent currents the craft fur would be OK, but it's not a good choice for slower currents/speeds. Marabou simply moves better.

Hi Peter. I've seen some Deceiver patterns with a loop of heavy mono tied in under the tail to prevent fouling. I don't know if it's more effective than bucktail, but it's equally simple. I'm going to tie some of these for stripers.

I've tried the loop as well. It did the job preventing fouling, but my fish catching with the fly wasn't impressive. I went back to no loop and catching fish. The loop shouldn't have made a difference, but it did.

I have a little question about polyleaders. 2 polyleaders in the same strength and density,like 12lb trout intermediate 8ft and 10ft,they have the similar weight but different length.Which one of them is good at turning big flies ,and which one is good at presentation?does it make difference?

All else being equal, the shorter PolyLeader will turn over big flies better than a long one.

Thanks for very helpful videos. Peter, I have recently started trout spey on the Tongariro in New Zealand. I have a 4wt with integrated 4 (325g) Skagit line. I also have a set of Airflo 5ft trout polyleaders. Can I use the 5ft floater for indicator nymphing heavy bombs and eggs for our steelhead? Will it create enough of an anchor? Regards Linton

I can't understand why gloomis don't make travel fly rods.. they are missing out on a bug market ... travel rods are.so convenient to fit into suitcase for international travel and no worrying about loosing big old rod tubes

Just splurged on a 4 wt Loop 7X. Somewhat similar to the rod you have. It's an absolute pleasure to cast! Looking forward to seeing what line and tips you end up choosing.

Congratulations on 50 years. The 4wt looks like a lot of fun. I have other rods, but I tend to only use my 10'4" 5wt switch and 10' 6wt switch. In the summer I do mostly dries, and I've went down to a #16 on the 6wt. The shorter rods also make it easier to net fish.

Ya, another Asquith. ;) Seriously, I don't usually think in terms of good, better, best. For fishing rods, it's just a matter of the fishing situation and what I felt like fishing that day. For pure performance, the Asquith and NRX+ are usually near or at the top of any rod competition.

I have St. Croix Mojo bass 7ft. 9in. 8wt. The carp on the Delaware River are large. Is that rod enough ?

Yes, the shorter 7' 9" rod has more leverage on a fish than a 9' rod. An 8 wt. is enough as well. I've landed huge carp on an 8.

There are a variety of reasons for this but the main two are: 1: Being too aggressive with the forward stroke which doesn't allow enough time for the backcast to roll out, usually with overpowering the forward stroke early on. This causes the fly to kick over and smack the water. 2: Dipping the rod tip at the end of the backcast which aims the fly at the water. Easiest way to avoid the problem plus improve distance also involves two things: 1: Watch your backcast. It's amazing how many problems this cures. 2: Incorporate drift into the backcast with a hand raise at the end. This not only will improve distance, but it results in the backcast having extra time to roll out, plus it makes that early overpower more difficult to accomplish. It slows us down, which is always a good thing.

No problem at all. I use Airflo 375 grain Sniper 9 wt. lines on it with no difficulty and those lines can chuck pike flies with ease.

I just tie a perfection loop on the end of my line. It's abit rough but I still catch fish haha
