It looks like its making a nest hole. But why so close to the ground? Unless its trying to get to bugs inside the trunk? It does look like a male but im not very familiar with their habits.

Fun fact.... Woodpeckers have a very long tongue. They wrap it around their brains from the inside so they don't damage their brain when drilling. Cool huh?

To be honest, wookpeckers scare me. What if you get near one and it gets mad, flies over to you, latches onto your shoulder and drills a hole in your skull? Ded. Ur ded. The only bird that makes me weary around it.
