Congratulations on a terrific thru hike! I watched your whole journey and really enjoyed it. You were honest, real, funny, open, and mostly I felt like you were being you. I've been type 1 since 1991 and I could often see and feel your struggles. My last backpacking trip into the smokies had me one day bottomed out and my hiking buddy carrying both of our packs because it was difficult for me to even walk. Thank you for sharing this journey with all of us!

I'm on my way for a long thru trip myself so thx for the tips. I have the Eversense CGM which I'm so glad knowing I have 180 days coverage and I don't have to worry about accidentally removing my transmitter like other CGM's I simply just put it back on. The drawback is charging it every other day so for me the solar power bank is so important and I brink a 20,000mAh which has lasted me 2 weeks with no solar charging at all.

The 180 days is a nice feature for sure! Best of luck in the journey ahead for you! I'd be curious how the battery charging works out or causes any super big frustration!

👍🏻👍🏻 Thanks Jim! I'll be posting a more full in depth edit that will include more dialogue about my experience with T1D while on trail. It really comes down to the fact that while I was out living in the woods for 6+ months I had the best management experience of my T1D ever in my life! I miss it every day now!

You Crack me up! I understand your struggles. I was diagnosed in 1991 at the age of 34. A year later I was an advisor on a scouting backpacking trip into the mountains. Climbing over 11,000 feet sure was a learning curve! And I was pretty clueless to start with. They definitely don't send you home from the hospital with a "how to live" manual. After 1st couple of days on trail I got my trail name, "low dose" that's one that should require no explanation to you. Hike on DJ. Hike on!

DJ, Luv your content on here and instagram. I use Insulin pens and the challenge will be a little different than yours. I’m thinking of getting a month worth of my two types of insulin and carry in probably 2 Frio cases up the trail. I’ll have to find a place to refill each month. Thank you again for sharing your T1D Thru Hike Journey. I’m in Central Ohio so probably not too far from you.

Thanks Jim. Sounds like a good plan. I switched back to Anthem this year for health insurance. One benefit is CVS is in contract with them so filling scripts through them is easy. There are several CVS along the trail so that could possibly be an option for you. If you are in Central OH we should definitely link up sometime.

DJ, Talked to my Endo and she mentioned another patient she has who did the appalachian trail. He had trouble with sweating which caused his dexcom to fall off and opted not use it. I got an idea about covering it up. I found some bands on Amazon that are specifically for covering multiple type sensors. Have you experienced any issues like this with your sensors? Any thoughts? PS: I’m pushing my hike to 2025, broke my ankle last summer and I think I need another year to build it back up. Thanks again for this channel.
@strongertogetherdj
@strongertogetherdj Жыл бұрын
@@jimsjourney6514 Hey Jim, yup that is a good concern to have! Here is the combo that works well for me. I try to make sure my skin is somewhat clean prior to putting on a new Dex sensor. Then I use Skin Prep a wipe you can grab on Amazon and I wipe down the back of my arm where I plan to put the Dex. I then wait like :30sec before installing the new sensor. My skin is extra tacky by doing that. I then add a Simipatch adhesive patch overtop that is designed to use with the Dexcom sensors. It has the sensor cut out in the patch itself so it just goes over top the adhesive on the sensor. You could also use the Expression Med tape ones but they are more expensive. I only wear my Dex on my arms. I change arms with each sensor change. I personally have had zero issue with this set-up since I've been doing it this way and I sweat buckets!!! You could also add luko tape overtop as well as a third precaution!! Hope this helps!! I'll try to add some videos to address this when i'm on trail to give you a look of what the flow looks like in real life on trail!! -DJ
