I played them in a separate video comparing them to the original pickups. The beginning is an AB comparison. The ending is with a mix. It's called "EMG Maverick 5 in a Fender Player Strat". The thumbnail is a strat in a boxing match.

I replaced my Edge 3 with a Gotoh. What a difference in sustain! Had to shim the Gotoh to match my neck radius and drill new holes for the posts (used FR posts as they are smaller diameter), but what a nice difference.

Sweet tone, not too twangy like most teles, but I dont hear the boost hitting any preamp tubes very hard, just beefs up the tone from my speakers. Are you using a tube amp? Or modeler. Where did you tuck the 9v?
@andrewglossa
@andrewglossa 10 ай бұрын
There's not a huge gain increase in this set up, but I don't know why. The ones in the strat increase gain much more. I used a Helix modeler. The 9V just barely fit under the neck pickup in the cavity.

I was thinking about getting this but i dont think i will anymore. There isn't much difference in sustain to justify it i think. I put Steve Vai Gravity and Storm pickups in my guitar and its funny because when i did it, i was using a boss GT100 and really wasnt liking the guitar or the GT100. Couple years later i got an AxeFx 3 and still didnt really touch that guitar because it was cheap even though it had the Steve Vai pickups. I put new strings on last week, chose a high gain tone i made for one of my other guitars and i am blown away at this guitar now. The pickups are Djenty AF with that trebly high end sound you hear in progressive metal. The clarity is way better than my other guitars so im just going through everything i can to push it in anyway i can. If you're having tuning issues, i would highly recommend new springs. I got some "noiseless" springs from Amazon for my other guitar and it fixed that issue so i bought some new noiseless springs for this guitar and im sure itll fix my tiny tuning problem. New strings obviously help but that's literally half the battle because the springs are the other half and if one doesnt return to zero, it will have a direct correlation to string pitch on the strings.

I appreciate your work and I can hear the difference with headphones, I find the originals to my liking. The EMG”s gave and almost compressed, somewhat flat sounding response. A long time ago I put a set of Shaller (sic I believe) PBX in a Squire P bass and while being “hotter” they also gave a similar compressed response.

So you can just replace the tone knob with the spc and everything functions as it should? (Minus tone control obviously) I read a review of a person replacing the tone knob with the spc like you did and he said it made his guitar sound thin and terrible so I was hoping he just did wrong lol. My strat is sss with one volume, one tone and a toggle switch for a gilmore mod but I never use my tone knob so I wanted to replace it with the spc.

The Yamaha 174 is a great bass for the money. Thanks for the video comparison, lots of work involved. I like the stock pickups better, warmer tone to me. The stock J bridge pickup hums a bit, so I recommend a J Humbucker replacement from Seymour Duncan or something similar.

Yamaha TRBX174 is my first bass. A guitarist, I researched & thought long and hard before pressing the buy button. Decided to KISS, modern and standard scale for my first bass, so after thinking of a TRBX304 that and general unavailability due impact of COVID on production and distribution for the past couple of years entered the equation. Other than Ibanez & Cort, Yamaha really has no peer value equivalents. I like the Cort Action Plus PJ equally, but it was a close run thing which again along with general lack of availability and a couple of other factors favouring the Yamaha, I went with the TRBX. In hindsight I'm glad I did. The saving permitted me to buy a better amp than initially planned for need and stay within budget. I'm delighted with every aspect of the TRBX174.

I agree with you on the single coil hum. I'ts awful. Do you know how these pickups might compare to the EMG FT pickups.I'm not a high gain player mild overdrive for lead is mostly what use and I like clarity without the Icepick in the forehead kind of brightness. Do you have a recommendation the T52 or the standard EMGs?
@andrewglossa
@andrewglossa 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not familiar with the FT pickups. The T-set and T52 are both really nice, but both need the SPC mid boost to really come out. You could also add some mids with an eq pedal, but having the mid boost on the guitar has been really handy.

Nice demo! Sounds like the set isn't properly matched, as the bridge position (J) has got a considerably lower output than the "neck" (P). I had the same issue with my ca. 1999/2000's set - whereas the ones I bought in the mid 80s were absolutely *perfect* . I *never* should've sold them! Dunno what they've done to screw up what used to be a fine PU set, but they certainly did it - for whatever reason. Lesson learned: If it's got to be EMGs, make sure you get a used set from the 80s!

Agree: EMGs have changed over the years... And, IMHO, not for the best... So, nowadays, if you want the same "match" of the first PJ's, you have to install a regular EMG "P" + an EMGX on the bridge. Then you'l have the same output of the old EMGs...
