Hey, Lu! Just received your latest email. Can you tell me what you have done to compensate for how close your speakers are to your back wall? I have a similar situation with proximity and cannot change it. Any suggestions??
@MasteredbyLu
@MasteredbyLu Ай бұрын
So in my case I put them up against the wall to lower the fundamental frequency that the lows are pushing. Shifting more of my sub energy lower! This helps flatten out the mids better in my experience and for the last couple months I've played with different configurations and spoke with people who exclusively work in studio tuning to get different options of approaching the best setup. In the end the one that resulted in what I believe to be the best setup was right up against the wall and sitting near them. I get less acoustic interference, More bottom end out of my 5" monitors (which are insanely massive sounding, check out Strauss NF-3), and best of all, everything above 300 for the most part is 2dB +/- ! If you let me know what issue you're experiencing maybe I can give a specific tip that I learned and was communicated that I feel may work for you too!

@@MasteredbyLu this actually makes a lot of since for me too. I’m using 5” monitors so, if I’m hearing (reading) correctly, that will increase the subs making me less likely to add TOO much in the sub range. I’ll get you a pic of what I’m working with on Twitter. I follow both you and Dee Kei on there.
@MasteredbyLu
@MasteredbyLu Ай бұрын
@@dannycancino3614 yeah! Mine have a pretty good Amount but because the wall (in this case we’ll call it the boundary) it reinforces the lows with minimal phase issues. Obviously softer mounted would be ideal as far as phase goes but in my case just not possible so next best is right against it. Remember if you have more positives than negative values in your graph it *could* be easier to find ways to correct it and with this method you’ll see the dip most people get at around 80-120 in most traditional room sizes start to lessen and move in a more favorable position :)

how did you change record track with it automatically disarming the previous one?

Hi Lu, for solo classical piano track, do you recommend using soft clipper rather than a limiter ?, because I guess the punchy agressive parts will have less power or attack in the case of limiter.
@MasteredbyLu
@MasteredbyLu Ай бұрын
Typically I would use a little compression first and then soft clip the peaks that made it through. With soft clipping the issue can be that you are add saturation while preserving a little bit of the low punch. Hard clipping is great if you really are just looking to clip a few outliers!

What I wish I learned sooner as a mixer is that, while it’s crucial to learn, understand and practice the fundamentals, it’s actually a detriment to one’s progress to stay in practice mode for too long. There’s something that comes with working on real projects for other artists/clients that helps clarify the essential practical skills needed to be an effective engineer-namely good logistical skills (file management, workflow, communications) and the ability to discern when your work is good enough for the given project-rather than go down rabbit holes of aspired perfection.

Agreed on the point with hardware and gear in general. But, also I wish I'd had some really better fundamental understanding of room treatment and how my rooms sounds (and how to fix issues). This would have solved so many issues early on, but again in the spirit of what you said it's best not to get fixated on this, e.g buying some super expensive diffuser which is not going to have any impact in your room. On the flip side, what do you think are some things that you should aspire for when you start out? i.e is an Apollo worth the investment over a Scarlett? Do $500 monitors really give you a lift over those $100 ones?

Pro Q3's only advantage is it's interface. In terms of sound quality people have moved onto Kirchhoff-EQ which is head and shoulders above it. It's dynamics section is less intuitive but that's why there is soothe2. Pulsar Audio 8200 is also another quality EQ as well as Equilibrium from DMG Audio. All of these sound better than Pro-Q3.
@MasteredbyLu
@MasteredbyLu 4 ай бұрын
You know I don’t disagree, with that said, this one has resulted in faster turn around times and have yet to get a reject on a mix or master due to which Eq I use which is the point of the video. Pro-q 3 was used as the reference point of the core reason the video was made, getting to know and use the tools you have and making them work the best way you can. Keeping flow state alive and not over complicating the work by wondering if what you have is good enough or not :) I still haven’t tried the 8200! What’s your experience with it?
@pac0re
@pac0re 4 ай бұрын
@@MasteredbyLu The 8200 is "less smeary" it's really matter of taste though. For some stuff the envelope of the sound is preserved supremely well. Give it a demo, and see what you think. I've made good mixes on all of them but the Kirchhoff gets me there quickest with the least amount of tweakage.
@MasteredbyLu

Hmmmm I have to master some Country Records tomorrow, Ill snag the demo and check it out! Im a fan of the MDWEq-5 as it also just sound great pushed but kills it at narrow cuts that maintain a musical tone! I believe it was my friend @DeeKeiMixes that first brought up the Kirchhoff-EQ to me and was showing me how wild the amount of customization was! He made his own color scheme and all!

No i was still breathing, just really heavy haha. Yeah french doors are MUCH harder due to their design but Acoustic French Doors do exist!
