I am totally fascinated by the Pig Brig method of trapping Boars. The fact that it's utilises their own 'rooting' against them is pure genius.

Red deer will dig up tubers/bulbs they like, and are likely to paw something like ply covers if they feel like it. Wapiti would be highly likely to also. How similar other deer species behaviour is would be interesting. Deer key in on particular feeds. It's possible if they get a taste of something unexpected in corn/bait they would leave it alone. If corn could be impregnated internally with something unpleasant (meat/egg protein, pepper?) without it being externally detectable it might repel them. Had a fawn that would grab cooked veges off the dinner plate that accidentally grabbed a bit of meat one day, spat it out and poked it's tongue in & out trying to get rid of the obviously horrible taste, & stopped it's annoying behaviour henceforth. Concealing such unpalatable flavour in a manner it's undetectable until eaten is the challenge. Note deer seem to avoid poison baits if they get a sub-lethal dose (supposed to be relatively colourless, odour less & tasteless), which suggests learned behaviour. Unpalatable plants get similar treatment.

That might be ok for private property but if you are trapping for government or mine sites and they see pigs with eyes poked out as they run into the riobar you can kiss your contract goodbye.

can someone please explain why they don't just burrow back out the way they came in? When new hogs enter there are gaps where they can lift the net further with their snouts and exit. Perplexing
@MMMmyshawarma

The net at the bottom curves inward. The pigs naturally root under brush, so moving forward under something and letting the net fall off their back doesn't spook them. Once inside, the position of the net on the ground makes them stand on it while trying to root to get back out. They haven't realized they are keeping themselves in. It also looks like the inner circle of net is anchored down at several points, so it's less likely the net bottom is pushed outward.

Also, there's not a whole lot of unnatural noises with a net, so they don't panic en mass if one decides to leave, spends some time trying to get out, but ultimately sticks around and eats some more.

Interesting to watch the hog behavior after they realize that they are trapped. They could chew thru the net. But don’t stick with it. They will grab a mouthful and pull a bit. Last, they had to “dig” under to get into the pen for the bait corn. But it never occurs to them to try the same to get out.

They think it's bushes. They don't realise that once inside, the beginning of the net isn't at their front feet, but the back. Even if they dig the same way they got in, it wouldn't work. They would likely fail the step on towel trolley test

Managing feral hog disease is like playing a strategic game of chess. Each move influences the potential spread of diseases, requiring careful planning and execution to protect both human health and livestock. Because who doesn't love a backyard BBQ with a side of infectious diseases? Let's make sure our feral hogs stay healthy and our pork remains contamination-free. Just what every BBQ enthusiast dreams of!

Just as a skilled chef tweaks a recipe to suit different tastes, the Pig Brig trap trigger customizes trap settings, offering a tailored solution for both remote management and catching elusive animals. Because, you know, we all love chasing after trap-shy pigs in our free time. It's the epitome of relaxation.

Do you eat the deer that get trapped in these contraptions or do you feed them to the buzzards?
@PigBrig
@PigBrig Жыл бұрын
@spyingdutchman, mostly deer jump in and out of the trap. If you don't use a bait deterrent and you have an antlered deer that is trapped, oftentimes, you can release them from the net. If they are dead when you arrive, use basic food safety knowledge as we would for eating road kill - freshness, flies, temperature, eye color, and smell are all indicators of whether you can consume or leave for scavengers.
