A very enthralling opera that stirs up sentimental emotions. I empathize with Canio's emotional disturbance. He may be the enthusiastic clown Pagliacci who never fails to play a successful comical act to amuse his audience but he could never contain his ras emotions as he was inflamed with fury, curiosity, suspicion and jealousy. Canio loved and adored Nedda too much to believe that she would be attracted to a common man named Silvio. However, I realize that his domineering nature had trapped Nedda like a bird in a cage and had possibly been abused in any form although he claims to be the one who reached out to her as a starving little orphan, giving her food, shelter and clothing and raised her in this theatre travelling business. Eventually he married her. They must have had a wide age gap because they could've shared a father and daughter relationship rather than husband and wife. Plus, the fact that he attacks men who come in contact with his wife proves that he is very dangerous to society which is no wonder why Nedda felt uncomfortable and insecure so she found solace with Silvio who empathized with her situation and convinced to escape this miserable life of a theatre performer. This companionship led to an intensed affair which could have been avoided knowing what Canio would've done to her if he discovers this secret. I wish there had been a plot twist but what do you expect from a composer's authentic work? If Leaoncavallo decides on a tragic ending that will be it as this was based on a real-life experience he witnessed during a performance which is similarly portrayed in the opera. Anyways, the characters may be fictional but it relates a timeless event of romantic ecstasy, betrayal and violence.
