I found a Reddit post just the other day asking techs what health issues they've seen the most in fellow radiology techs. It was one person after the next saying either thyroid cancer or cataracts. Any idea what would cause cataracts so commonly in this field?
@SydneyPipp
@SydneyPipp Күн бұрын
Sensitive parts of your body such as your thyroid and eyes are going to react to radiation exposure at lower rates than other body parts. It is generally recommended to wear lead lined glasses and thyroid shields when performing fluoroscopic procedures but techs may not choose to wear these additional protective equipment for various reasons. The hospitals that I’ve been employed in require lead vests to be worn but not thyroid shields or lead lined glasses. Honestly I don’t even know where to find lead lined glasses in my current hospital that I’m allowed to wear (not belonging to a radiologist). So ultimately the head and neck of a radiographer are frequently exposed and since the eyes and thyroid are already sensitive to radiation then they are negatively impacted the most. I hope this helped!

Every hospital is different but from what I have seen is general radiology does not supply lead glasses for specific individuals. You may find that a department has a pair of “community” glasses that are shared amongst the entire staff. However, if you are in an interventional radiology or cath lab role I have seen personal issued glasses. This is because these techs are exposed to a lot more radiation than general rad techs.

I thought the main reason was the shields keep the scatter from bouncing out thus increase pt dose
@SydneyPipp
@SydneyPipp Күн бұрын
This is a good point! I have heard of the theory that using a lead shield essentially "traps" scattered x-ray photons from being ejected from the patient's body resulting in an increase dose. However, the two articles that I referenced were more concerned about obscuring anatomy and covering AEC photocells. I attempted to do more research on the data that has been collected on the "trapped scatter" theory, but I have been unsuccessful thus far on finding solid proof from a reputable source. If you have a link with more information, then I would be glad to look over it!

Luckily you’ll be so busy with full time classes that you won’t have any time to spend “fun” money. Haha. But in all reality it is going to be challenging and tight for the time being. However, if you take out loans or end up in debt through school you will most likely have the opportunity to work overtime or two jobs (one full time one PRN) to pay it off quickly once you graduate.

I’m currently going to a community college for my prerequisites in TX, but I’m not fully aware which ones are REQUIRED as I’ve searched everywhere and my advisors feel like they’re having me take classes that don’t involve medical science, as of right now I’m starting my english and math along with general psychology
@SydneyPipp
@SydneyPipp 7 күн бұрын
You might not need psychology. I had sociology instead as a requirement. I’m assuming you will transfer schools and that the community college does not have a radiologic technology program? If so then you need to look up which school you want to go to for your actual rad tech program and look at their required courses as a guide on what to take at the community college. Also ensure that the credits will transfer. You can do all of this by contacting the college that you will be attending (or want to attend) for the rad tech program directly. Don’t let the community college waste your time or money by suggesting courses that won’t benefit your progress in the rad tech program. I hope this helped!

How many patients do Hospital Rad techs typically see in a day? Is there alot of physical labor in the field and if so, what kind? Is there alot of burnout in this field and what's causing it? Thanks
@SydneyPipp
@SydneyPipp 12 күн бұрын
The number of patients can vary dramatically. At my hospital I can have days where I only get like 7 patients on a slow night. Larger adult hospitals can keep you busy and you can have 30 patients or more in a day. There is a lot of walking, pushing a portable machine (with driver assist), raising your arms over your head to maneuver the X-ray tube and helping patients transfer to the X-ray table. There was a large exodus of techs during Covid so now most of the burnout would be working too much because of being short staffed. As long as you’re working with solid management there are plenty of techs that retire from this field.
@kevin.itruth6880
@kevin.itruth6880 11 күн бұрын
@@SydneyPipp Thanks for the quick reply Sidney, by the way love your videos talking about the field intelligently. I was reading on Reddit people saying they see 40-50 patients a day and it boggles my mind how that is even possible. Are the exams fairly quick for the most part? That's the only way I can imagine seeing that many patients on average.
@SydneyPipp
@SydneyPipp 11 күн бұрын
If techs are claiming to perform that many exams in a day then I would assume that most of the exams are portable chest X-rays which take just a few minutes and you can knock out a lot with one trip to the emergency department. Either that or they are counting the number of exams completed their entire shift by the whole department which has multiple techs working so it’s not just one person doing the 50 exams. A typical exam that is not a portable chest can be done in 10-15 minutes depending on the abilities/cooperation of your patient.

Im looking at a medtech school that has direct entry into a LMRT certificate program as their prerequisite to a bridge program for the RT AAS. Pretty much everything but the clinic hours is online, so Im not too sure about that. However, its one of two schools my state's medical board recommends.

I haven’t heard of going that route before but I am glad that there are hybrid programs available for those who are disciplined enough to have all of their radiology courses online. I’m definitely not one who would benefit from this style of learning but I’m sure that has been a great option for some. Another thing to keep in mind is how long it would take you to complete both the initial certificate then the bridge program.. from a quick glance I found this route in one circumstance to take over 28 months whereas my associates degree was complete in roughly 21 months. Just something to keep in mind when weighing pros and cons for either side. Good luck on your journey!

First, I would recommend searching schools with radiologic technology programs near you. Choose one you’d like to attend and look at their program curriculum which should include required prerequisites. When you have a list of prerequisites then you can decide if you would like to start taking those courses at the same college as the program you would like to attend or if you want to take them at a different college to then transfer when you’re ready to enter the rad tech program. Typically it’s easier to take all courses with the same college but it might be more cost effective to take courses elsewhere. I hope this helped!

@SydneyPipp 5 күн бұрын
It is more likely that you’ll gain a seat at the college you’re already attending. However, if you perform well at another college for your prerequisites then it will show them that you’re likely to do well in their program therefore increasing your chance of gaining a seat.

@SydneyPipp 5 күн бұрын
Also, if you are waitlisted or denied attendance to the program you applied to then you’re able to request a reason as to why you didn’t make it into this years cohort. Then you can take that information to improve next year or attempt to apply for an alternative college.

If you want to commit to the Rad tech program and feel as though you can manage a full time course load with clinicals then I would look into changing your program entirely as soon as possible. Some of your credits should transfer over to your associates degree in radiologic technology if you were taking basic courses like math/english/physics. If you continue to take general courses (completing prerequisites for the rad tech program) with the expectation to change programs at a later date then it will lighten the load once you’re in the program. Then you’d be able to focus more on the core courses that will be important to comprehend when it comes to taking the ARRT registry. I hope this helped, good luck making your decision!

However when i asked if i should do anything different they said no precautions were necessary because radiation is so little compared to many years ago. I asked for a badge and they said by law that was not required anymore. I took it on myself to use a lead apron over my stomach even though they said i dont have to do that but i am so scared to expose my baby. I then asked to please order a badge for me and they did but it was only because i insisted. Im almost twelve weeks now and i didnt get the badge until last week. I could be exaggerating but i feel like they are in the wrong. There is another pregnant girl now she just found out and they told her not to wear the apron when she takes x rays. I think because they heard me when i told her to take care of herself and cover her belly.

Good job advocating for yourself and your baby! Although it is true that radiation dosage has been reduced over the years that doesn’t account for the fact that there is no threshold for a “safe” amount of radiation exposure. I’d rather take the precautions of abiding by radiation safety measures than potentially put my child at risk for any negative effects of radiation. I hope that your coworker follows your lead throughout her pregnancy as well even with naysayers around 😜
