I was last in Svalbard in July 1996 with a group tour from Shetland Islands. Had a wonderful 3 nights and both scenery and people as well as the day trips were all highlights. Would hope to see the Islands again but for longer. Excellent video

I looked up the blue phase/hour some time ago and the best information I could claim is that this is the phase where the sun is between 4-8 degrees below the horizon but I would even posture that this should be extended to 4-9 degrees below the horizon because even at around 9 degrees below, it can leave a very nice glow on a clear day/evening post sunset/pre-sunrise. In the UK where I live, I just see grey days all the time and I absolutely despise it! no summers, just grey skies and rain 90% of the time. Also, this year has been way colder than normal with the most arctic induced April since 1986 - and 1986 was possibly the coldest year of the 1980s with the coldest February almost of the last century and the dullest and coldest August (or Dull-Gust as I like to call it)as well as the wettest. Summer don't exist here either.

I love watching the darkness folly its way through the open ways of nature after sunset but it isn't often I get to experience it and our twilights aren't particularly long (I'm at the 52 degree latitude point though). Blue skies are hypnotic to watch as they transcend through the twilight phases, at least up to the 12-14 degrees sub-horizon level. 15-18 degrees below makes for next to impossible to see sunlight under artificially lit streets in town/city areas. I can only envision (literally)obtaining the privilege to watch the very beginning of astronomical twilight in an unlit area but it would be spooky all the same.
@user-pd6bd7ir4z2 жыл бұрын
@@dancercj1491 yeah astro twilight is almost impossible to see. especially in towns and cities. on a clear day at the outskirts of towns in england , it is possible to see it until around 13-14 degrees below. After that it just looks like a regular night. I think you’d need to go to a really good site in the countryside on a clear day to observe it fully. But dont forget astro twilight simply means stars are less visible when the sun is less than 18” below.

It is not easy to live there, Master of Puppets. No social security, no health care, no home unless you get a job first and the constant threat of polar bears, to name but a few things. I, too, had dreams of going to live there but changed my mind after watching this video.

Also mention that in 2015 11 houses were demolished by an avalanche and 10% of the citizens have left and its in the extreme risk of climate change all tourism and building is not helping but rather contributing to the deleterious effects. Wish people cared more...
