That's the air brake self test. You can listen to it to determine if there is a serious issue with the brakes. Came pretty handy just yesterday when a driver hit a serious bump after switching into the right turn lane at an intersection on FL-HW 85. That bump tore one of the brake air lines loose, and the compressor could only pressurize to 25 PSI afterwards. Worse thing is: that bus was in the shop just a week prior for about 5 weeks (95% of which was waiting for parts from Bluebird). The bus in question was a Bluebird Vision with the Stoneridge dashboard, bucket seating (~50 PAX), Cummins ISB 6.7, Interstate Gearing (75 MPH top speed), manufactured in 2009, and was owned by the local college as part of their full-dual-enrollment program. The driver was given a 2002 Bluebird 3800 from the county since we're out of substitute busses, and the bus was limped to the shop by one of the mechanics with proper precautions (Hazard lights on, right lane only unless turning, speed not above 30 miles per hour, escorted)
