I bought a simple shokuhachi ( uncoated bore bamboo ) in Santa Cruz 30 years ago and never got a sound. Found it today . Yours is the 3rd tutorial I found and got a sound immediately. Subscribed! Looks like we missed each other , I moved from New York to SF. I wonder if LaMama and all those Loaisaida galleries are still around ?

Ah, this is what I was needing! Thank you for this helpful lesson for a beginner such as I. I come from a didgeridoo background so, breathing like this is different for me. I appreciate the little bit of practice structure you included 🙏🏼

What do you think is the best key to play Shakuhachi? I play the DongXiao so I have some knowledge on how to play basically, but I'm thinking about getting a Shakuhachi, which are two different flutes. But I don't know what key to get it.

1.8 standard length if you want to study with a teacher. Outside of that, I personally like long bass flutes. That requires alternate hand and finger positions but might not be an issue for any m usician as we know how to adapt.

@@perryyung1733 do they sound different. Also, I going to be practicing on my own with a book and some online video most likely

@@solacellee Yes, every handmade shakuhachi sounds and feels different. I recommend my refurbished wooden shakuhachi made in Japan. These are the standard for students. Then find a teacher.

Very nice. What is the meaning of 1.8 , is it 12"+8" = 20 inch long , ????? What should be the inner diameter of this traditional shakhachi flute. Is it 55 long centimetre.?

Thank you so much this video is wonderful I’ve been honking on one of your Shakuhachis for about a month now and I’m in love this is the first thing in life I’ve actually enjoyed sucking at. I’m looking forward to learning this instrument more and the benefits I’m gaining from the breath control relate into my martial arts training and as you say meditative breathing.

I am back almost a year later! I need a refresher :) Thanks again. I usually make hardwood, generally Native American style or tribal influenced flutes without binding, but will be doing more indigenous river cane.

Beautiful. I am reminded of 1 Giant Leap which was a faith purchase that did not disappoint. I only wish I could have seen the entire concert with Perry Yung playing with Vangelis. I bet it was spectacular. Kudos to all musicians featured. There is so much wonderful music in the world that people should not restrict themselves to only national artists and musicians. Thanks for sharing this.

So I've gone through with out the make them and I'm stuck on how to actually play it ! But this "like a smiling Buddha blowing lips open the size of a grain of rice" has worked out for me so far. As you taught me how to make them I will learn how to play them. Thanks. The masters surely are proud of you sir

So I have made my own shakuhachi and when I blow through it it makes no noise at all other than the sound of air going through a tube I believe however the problem is because my end is not flared or tapered and because it is an equal circumference the entire length of the flute. Do you have any ideas of what I can do to fix it or should I start over with a new one?
