Soo good! I admit, I have learned so much from your videos, especially your one on the S900. Without it, I don't think I would be whipping around on my personal unit as well as I am. It seems like you've got quite the gear collection. Wow. Great job on this track too, sounds so phat!!

If you have you're MPC in controller mode like this, and plugged in USB into the computer, would it over ride somthing like a focusrite plugged into the computer as well? I'm gonna try this after work, not sure if they will fight eachother or if I need to set the output to the mpc in preferences?
@tonelab
@tonelab 27 күн бұрын
Nup.. none of the audio interfaces "override" other interfaces, for the reason being.. you can 'nominate' which audio interface is your 'Primary' interface. So, if your MPC is in Controller Mode, and of course.. connected via USB (which is the only way you can achieve Controller Mode), then you can go into Ableton's preferences, or Logic's or any other DAW for that matter.. and select the Input audio-interface and the Output audio-interface. It's generally best to use the same for both the 'Input' and the 'Output', but in most applications.. you do have those options presented to you. I hope that helps 🙏🏻

Got an issue. I have a Korg X3 hooked in, and I'm able to play sounds on the Korg and have them sequence into the MPC. However, when I try to use any MIDI channel besides the first one, I get nothing, and am limited to one sound for an entire beat. Any insight to this one? I'm wondering if the X3 just can't do it lol

The best thing about the ASR ,(besides everything that makes it what it is...) People think with only a 2 line display, its literally ,mostly ,only 3 buttons to get wherever you need to.. (its a matter of timing and knowing your menu list., as you have mentioned..... Excellent!..) Yep, its just a Hop , Skip & jump wherever you need to go.... Best button "Flowchart" eva! Still got my 2 ASR key versions, max out.. well, neither with the Digital I/O, but at least one OEX-6 for one. Oh yeh... As an ASR lover, Subbed.

Hi, thanks for all your videos, they are a great resource and I learn new things with various hardware I have throughout your channel. Out of curiosity what is the purpose of this as opposed to something like making a midi channel in the mpc and just triggering the sounds from the external device almost like a sound module? Running its audio outs into a interface or something and tracking them both in real time. Is it just the clock is shifting or something? Also is the sequence for the roland recorded separately here or the data is being played from the mpc in real time, im assuming this is more so like a transport control thing where you actually recorded a sequence on the secondary device and you want them to "play" both machines simultaneously. As a secondary question what would be the advantage of something like this versus just using the externals like a rack unit and having all the data in the main device? I currently have 2 external machines hooked to my modern mpc and I use the modern one mainly as the brain to sequence everything else but trigger them in real time, would be curious if that is still the most efficient way of doing things or if there would be things to gain not using midi tracks in modern mpc and just triggering the sound banks in real time. Specifically an asr 10 and a 2kxl running into the live 2. Thanks in advance.

Q1: "What is the purpose of this.." A1: These retro-Roland devices are not MIDI, they are DIN Sync, only Clock pulse information is utilised. So, you don't have a lot of choice.. you can't 'trigger' their internal sounds.. unless, of course, you get these machines physically modified and retrofitted with custom MIDI interfaces. 👍🏼
@tonelab
@tonelab Ай бұрын
Q2: "Is the Sequence for the Roland recorded separately..." A2: If you consider Q1, then 'Yes', you can't 'trigger' their Sounds from the MPC. They have their own Sequencer which you can Sync up to a MIDI device using something like that Korg KMS-30. 👍🏼
@tonelab
@tonelab Ай бұрын
Q3: "What would be the advantage of something like this.." A3: I'm not sure there is an advantage.. but, rather, a 'means' in which you can achieve communication at all. 👍🏼
@tonelab
@tonelab Ай бұрын
Q4: "Curious if that is still the most efficient way of doing things.." A4: It's probably more a case of 'Whatever gets you through the night'.. you could Sample each sound, that you're triggering, and have it all 'internal' on your MPC. That might be 'effective' if you don't have much desk space, a small room, not enough inputs on your interface / mixer, etc. 👍🏼
@tonelab
@tonelab Ай бұрын
Q5: "An asr 10 and a 2kxl running into the live 2.." A6: Well, each Sequencer has it's own unique 'work flow'. So, when you sit at your ASR, and create something.. you're, unconsciously, working differently to how you would if you used the Sequencer on the MPC. How 'different' ?! ... well, who knows really.. but, you will make different decisions based on the functions that are at your disposal. You might prefer to Sequence the ASR from the 2000XL, in which case, you're adhering to a completely different physical interface with a completely different set of options. For example, the 2000XL has 'percentage' Swing, whereas, the ASR.. does not. So, I guess, you could say it's "Horses for courses" 🙏🏻

So, if I understand correctly.. you have 4 separate Samples?! ..each Sample located on a different Pad?! .. if 'yes', then you can Tune each Sample, via the Program page.. like in this clip (time indexed) 👍🏼 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pLqKm7mlnNeUiaM.html

I might be just as confused about the ASR-10 after learning all about it hahaha Is it just me (maybe due to coming up on Akai S2000, MPC2000 etc), but also did Ensoniq just do stuff in pretty weird ways?
@tonelab
@tonelab Ай бұрын
It's quite a monster.. but then, coming from an MPC.. which is more based around 16 sounds per 'Bank', the ASR-88.. for example.. is kinda more like an MPC4000.. but with 88 keys, instead of 16x4 Pads!.. or 61 (but the OS caters to 88 keys!). So, yeah.. stark differences.. and then the ASR has more of an emphasis on Keyboard patches and 'synthesis', rather than the MPC being slightly more 'affiliated' with Percussion, I guess one could say.. given the 'lack there of' physical keys 👍🏼

Very nice Deceptively simple but there are some hidden tips and tricks that make this a unique synth. I’d never sell mine now (mines a 1985 built model :) It can sound hard and bright but also soft and warm if you know how to do it. The negative envelope is lots of fun…

I have the mpc x and sp 1200 How can I connect them Midi out of the mpc x to midi in of the sp 1200
@tonelab
@tonelab Ай бұрын
Yep, by default the SP1200 will 'listen' to MIDI Channel #1. So, make sure your MPC Track is set to the same. Then, you'll need to 'trigger' the SP's 'Pads', via a specific set of 'notes' (that the Pads 'listen' for). You can find a list of these 'notes' in the description of this tutorial kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r7t0rLdjptOriGg.html And, for an even more detailed tutorial on the SP1200 try this video 🙏🏻 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nLCcn7Cau9ewY4k.html

@APMTenants
@APMTenants Ай бұрын
Didn’t really hear big difference until you went to the 909 beat. Hearing way less high end detail on the sp1200 in that clip. Obviously, the sample rate of the 1200 is just too low to reproduce frequencies above 13k. And if the DBs are peaked on both machines, that is going to leave more room for bass frequencies on the 1200. Low pass on the MPC at 13k BEFORE the converter, and I doubt there would be much difference at all

If you recently 'updated' your MPC's O.S.. then it's possible your O.S. is no longer compatible with your Computer. Failing that, double check you're not trying to open the AU version of the MPC plugin. This only works with the VST 🙏🏻
