Hello Prot, 11:00, I used xah-toggle-letter-case to make text uppercase or capitalized. It makes built-in functions more useful. I got a Corne 42 MX and am trying out Colemak. I'm a little concerned that this keyboard doesn't have enough keys for Emacs, but I hope I can manage to stick with the new layout. What was your typing speed with Colemak before you decided to switch back to QWERTY?
@protesilaos
@protesilaos 2 күн бұрын
Is the xah-toggle-letter-case an Emacs function? That is useful, though having it at the firmware level makes it editor-agnostic. I can have it in this text box where I write the comment, for example. I searched for Corne 42. It does not have the number row my keyboard has and it has one less key in each thumb cluster. You can still make it work though. Though it is a matter of how you will conceptualise your workflow and design the layers accordingly. About my typing speed with colemak it was really slow. Though I am also slow with qwerty, so this is not of much help. For me, part of the problem with an alternative layout is how it puts a constraint on the keycaps I can use while I am learning it. It works fine with a uniform profile, but then you cannot have a sculptured one that has the correct legends (unless you 3D print (which I have no access to) or find some set that is exactly the custom layout you are using). Whereas with qwerty you have one less thing to worry about and then can optimise for the combination of caps and switches that works for you. Maybe I will get better in the future, at which point I will reconsider alternative keyboard layouts.

@@protesilaos It is a custom Emacs function. My comment that included the link was not posted, but definition appears in the first web search result. I agree that being able to add more advanced functions directly to the keyboard/firmware is a really nice feature. There are tilting kits (for the keycaps) that are layout-agnostic, such as the 3DKeycap Lily58 Tilting Kit (MX switches), but I'm not sure if they work with 'regular' keycaps. I decided to try blank keycaps, and my Colemak learning process is going reasonably well so far.

Those keycap kits sound nice. I am curious how they feel in practice, especially with regard to the stem wobble of the switches. I assume it will be okay. Good luck with Colemak!

Thank you for sharing this video! As a long time computer user myself (> 40 years), I appreciate the difference a good keyboard can make. My first computer was a TRS-80 Color Computer and its keyboard was so bad that I gave the computer to my youngest brother, who promptly taught himself assembly language programming using PEEK/POKE in the built-in BASIC interpreter. That kind of self-inflicted suffering I happily avoid. The next keyboard I distinctly remember, was the one that came with the IBM PC AT I used at work. This, to me, was the perfect keyboard. It had the function keys on the left hand side, which was perfect for me, since I am left handed. Sadly, most keyboards these days have the function keys at the top of the keyboard. Sigh. Later on, I used Wyse50 terminals for several years and got accustomed to having the Control key on the home row, so I cannot live without that setup now. Fortunately, I have a .xsessionrc file that changes the CapsLock key to Escape when tapped, and to Control when held down, so I am much happier with that now. I got that tip from this link: tiborsimko.org/capslock-escape-control.html Recently, actually after your last video about your RSI/keyboard, I realised that I was much happier with the keyboard on my Lenovo laptop than with the external keyboard I normally use. Sadly, the laptop has decided to give up the ghost, so I am back to using an external keyboard. This was a horrible Dell keyboard, but digging around in the botton drawer of my filing cabinet, where things normally go to die, I found an old IBM keyboard, yanked it out and thoroughly cleaned it. While it is not perfect, it is a big improvement. It is a model KB-8923 with soft touch keys, so not the perfect keys of the IBM PC AT keyboard, but it's still pretty good. Having said that, the RSI that I have suffered from most in the past, was from using a mouse. This was so bad that I ended up having to wear a brace constantly, not just when using the computer. However, I have since switched to using a LogiTech Marble Mouse trackball, which I have modified slightly using Xmodmap. This has eliminated my RSI in my left hand completely! The only remaining RSI I suffer from, is when I spend all day shelling cocoa. I really have to stop myself from doing it for such long periods. Sigh. You are right about preventive care. Things add up over time. I would like to say that it is REALLY important to avoid sugar in one's diet as much as possible. We saw the effects of diabetes in our old neighbour and it is such a sad thing to see. It reduced her quality of life to be the point where she was bed-ridden. Of course, no one tells you these things when you are young. You feel immortal when you are young, but time is the master of us all. I enjoy your videos very much and have even gone back in your earlier videos. I'm slowly going through them on my journey of discovering Emacs. Now, Emacs is a thing that one should introduce to young people. :) It is SUCH a deep thing once you get into it. Stallman is a genius, no matter what people say about him. He is a visionary of such depth, it is almost uncanny. People laud Asimov and Carl Sagan, rightly so, but Stallman is impressive. And I say that as someone who used vi for many years, and vim after vi. They are both excellent programs, but Emacs is something closer to a cult. I have Emacs sessions open on both my desktop and my laptop constantly. What kind of program is like that? Personally, I'm convinced that Microsoft modelled Excel on Emacs. I don't really like Excel but I had to support it for many years, so I'm very familiar with it. Both Emacs and Excel contain discoverable functions that can be linked using scripts. In Excel, we have worksheets, in Emacs we have buffers. One _can_ create applications in Excel, another form of suffering I happily avoid :) But Emacs, because it uses Lisp, is really endlessly extensible. I written 2 tiny functions so far, but I can see how seductive that ability is. The main reason I didn't use Emacs before, was due to the memory limitations of the mainly small computers I used to work on. Nowadays, computers have more RAM than anyone can use, so Emas is a perfect fit :) Thank you once again for an enjoyable video!

Thank you for taking the time to share this! About keyboards, I think the hardware matters greatly. It is not the sole factor, though it is important. Mouse-related RSI is an issue I have read about before. It seems to be common. I guess the same principles apply there with regard to natural hand placement and the avoidance of awkward angles. As for Emacs, it is what I use for most of my computing on a daily basis. It is a wonderful program! You mention cocoa. Are you doing some physically demanding labour with it? Or is it something else I am missing?
@sethbrown1763

@@protesilaos All I am doing, is shelling the cocoa. That is, removing the shell from the dried cocoa beans. To get the best taste from cocoa, it must not be roasted to a point where it is effectively burnt, which is what normally happens. But my sisters-in-law, for whom I am shelling the cocoa, are very careful not to burn the cocoa, just to dry it, thus preserving the best flavour of the cocoa. Therefore, there is some effort to remove the shell from the cocoa bean, which requires a sharp blade. This is not physically strenuous, but it is very repetitive. Sometimes, I start before 6am and go all day, which I shouldn't. It is a kind of therapy (or Zen practice) for me, and helps to calm my nerves. The valley in which we live, is known for its cocoa. Coffee is also grown here.

Thank you for sharing! I used Kinesis 360 and Glove 80, and while they helped with pain, they only helped partially. Then, I got Ferris Sweep, a keyboard with only 34 keys. On top of that, I decided to use the new Nocturnal low-profile switches, with only 20-gram activation force. Extreme? Maybe. But it did it for me, and I can now type, comfortably, for as long as I need.

I’ve entered in the rabbit hole. If you want to go deeper without expending money, go check the miryoku keyboard layout. It is really nice, I’ve got addicted. The challenge is to use the other keys not used by Miryoku to be a cool extension for the defaults - for instance dedicated keys to some emacs key bindings.

Yeah, there is a lot to consider. I did discover miryoku before, but thought it would be too much work for me to learn it. There is always something to consider again.

For me hedonism is when the seek for pleasure has gone too far, and it you end up avoiding any effort whatsoever, i.e a mountain hike (because you might get tired). Btw, you walk pretty fast. So question: In your long walks, do you use to think? Because I personally tend to switch off my brain and just feel everything that surrounds me, and I sometimes I wonder if that's good or "bad" in terms that I could also use the walking time to think about stuff in my life.
@protesilaos
@protesilaos 16 күн бұрын
In my walks I usually relax and do not think about anything in particular. I tend to walk faster than what you see here, because I do not need to do any talking. But what happens when I relax is that new ideas bubble up. It is as if I cleared the space and now they can find a place there. I don't think there is a good or bad in this: you need to see it in the wider context of your lifestyle. For me, the important part is to not force things, such as to push myself to think about something specific. I let everything happen organically. It thus feels light instead of being a burden and, more importantly, it does not burn me out: I can keep doing it.

I appreciate the length of your philosophy videos. It gives me time to digest your points more thoroughly and make them stick in my mind. It must be much easier though to act out a intelligent/informed/sustainable hedonism in your environment. Where I and probably most of your audience live, such things are much less in the control of the individual, and it takes considerable effort to gain some freedom from the controlling mechanisms around us. 10 years ago it might have been easy access to drugs, and now it's the giant internet platforms steeling your time. Perhaps the movement stems from this kind of environment, where extreme claims like hedonism is bad seem more reasonable.

Long-form content can be harder to follow because there is a lot to take in. Though it also gives me the chance to provide a more complete version of my thoughts in the moment. To your point: yes, the environment is important. Life in the city has a very different pace and it is more common/likely to get involved in situations that are harder to control. About the Internet, I think this is a more tricky issue because it can affect you regardless of your physical surroundings. Here it is important to be disciplined in how much of it you consume. For me, getting off of social media was a major win, for example, as I no longer exposed myself to those induced mood swings and did not have something to distract me all the time.

And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow, Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings; There midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow, And evening full of the linnet’s wings.
