Good work! I have the exact same lathe, inherited from my dad. It was repainted that industrial green that was popular in the 1950s but I can live with that, since it's otherwise in good shape and fortunately didn't require any restoration. 🙂

Thanks for sharing. I too inherited a good deal of vintage tools, they were my great grandfathers. He was a union carpenter and machinist. Unfortunately a lathe was one of the only machines he didn’t own but he did have the tools. I owe it to him for having handed down some really quality tools I still use just about every day for my own work. Every time I dive into the massive tool chest I find something new that I didn’t notice before. This lathe came from a school woodshop and it sat for a good number of years until I got it. I plan to use it to earn my living and I hope to be able to pass it on to my great grandchildren someday. Hopefully this video was worth a subscribe, it encourages me to share more projects! Thanks for watching, the new parts are coming in and I’ll be putting everything back together soon.

@@ChristopherTrybus Mine was a school woodshop machine as well. My dad was the high school's industrial arts teacher in my home town and he purchased the lathe new for the school, I think sometime in the late 1940s. Over time it was replaced by newer lathes and it ended up stored away in a back room, and when my dad retired the school let him have it. I haven't done very much with it, but now that I'm retired myself I hope to put it to greater use. Speaking of inherited tools, if you haven't already you should check out Inheritance Machining's channel. He has a full machine shop he inherited from his grandfather and he produces some very good videos.

Thanks! Great idea. I looked for that but it’s really expensive. I can’t justify the cost just yet with kids and friends running in and out of the house through that door. I’ve already needed to replace the heavy duty screen once. 😂

You aren't concerned about wood movement on flatsawn boards cross grain construction?
@ChristopherTrybus
@ChristopherTrybus 2 ай бұрын
Yes it was definitely a consideration and a choice I wouldn’t normally make. The underside of these boards weren’t as pretty. Eventually this desk will end up a work station in the greenhouse for my wife and her botany/garden projects. She thinks it will look nice when it warps so I’m ok with it.. I installed some adjustable screw feet on the legs so when it does warp I can still keep it flat on the ground.

Nicely done! Getting my machine back up and running to do a bunch of vinyl work for my boat, and make a replacement holder for my Craftsman screwdriver set - the ancient vinyl cover has torn, letting the screwdrivers run amok in my tool case! Side question ... what camera(s) are you using? Great clarity in the video.

Thanks for watching! I have a few ideas for a tool roll too, just need the time to get started. I also have an old lab stool that needs a reupholster and I want to do it in leather. I’d love a leather machine but it was definitely motivating to know that a normal sewing machine could handle leather like this. As for the camera, thanks, it’s just an iPhone 13, nothing special.

Thanks for watching and thank you for the comments! I am aware of the effects that glue will have on this over time. And I do understand alternating grain on the top is desirable most of the time. My choices were all conscious decision, not mistakes. The image I have for the end product will be revealed over time. Planned intentional failures. If I wanted it to last 300 years I would have used hardwood.

How are you feeling about the height of the seats? Any recommendations?
@ChristopherTrybus
@ChristopherTrybus 6 ай бұрын
Seats are really fun part of the build customizing to how you like to use the canoe. For me I prefer to kneel and paddle or sit on the edge of the seat with my leg(s) tucked under, so being able to move around easily without getting my feet hung up was a real consideration. I went with 12" from the hull to top of the seat and it worked. As far as overall balance it also depends on the shape of the hull and your centers of gravity. So if you could imagine an extreme example, it be something like having seats attached directly to the gunwales on a narrow canoe with a round bottom hull. This may be top heavy for a paddler making it less maneuverable. Being comfortable, having the freedom to move around, and being able to adapt to water condtions is important to me. But whatever works for you!

I only 77 3 quarter ton c20 Chevy pickup it has a 292 straight 6 with a granny gear 4-speed transmission I'm 66 years old and I can work on it 👍👏🤣 I owned three trucks a 2007 to 2005 in the 77 and I kept the 77 just because I know how to work it I put some new parts on mine but I've kept everything and NOS I want to keep it as close to original as I can because when it was made out of the factory it was running perfect with what they put on it so I'm preserving that good luck with yours it's a good motor I wouldn't give it up I keep it just bring it up to par with some TLC and it'll last you forever

@@ChristopherTrybus english langage ; A Sabatier knife like the one you see with a 24 cm blade had been given to a couple more than twenty years ago, but they couldn't sharpen it no matter what. I offered him to try, at least to study the matter.... I finally found the way to recover it more or less... Almost a miracle. in fact, on 400 grit car polish paper I sanded flat vigorously on each side, already it removed stains, then I continued with a 800 grit on each side, then 1500, and 2000, 3000 ... the paper was laid flat on the table resting on a magazine for greater ease. I polished the blade again with 4000 / 5000 / 7000 grit bodybuilder's abrasive. I even polished the fretboard while I was at it. At the end of this work I had recovered a cutting edge which surprised me. I had finally found the trick to sharpen a Sabatier! Since I have a Ruixin fixed angle sharpener and a ts Prof blitz, I pieced a wire with an angle of about 20°. I cleaned it well with soapy water, and the next day I returned it to the couple... They were very surprised. I showed the woman how to proceed with bodybuilder's paper, simply by polishing flat or at least barely raised. if it can help you....

Thanks for watching! Check the link to the site where I purchased mine from. Not exactly sure what you mean by that, but it’s been an amazing knife still to this day and it seems to be of the same standards as the vintage sabs I’ve collected over these years.
