A dear and very close friend. I have many words to say, but this is not large enough a space. He was my accompanist, a sublime organist for the funeral of my father, we had many a dinner at my mother and my home, and he and I were truly confidantes and "Partners in Musical Crime". Still upset, and I raise a glass. One of the most brilliant people who ever peopled.

Lachlan was the very soul of music, itself, such was the inestimable calibre of his musicianship. He was by far the single most mature musician I have ever known - even from the youngest conceivable age. His depth of sensitivity, faultless interpretation, and extraordinary technical dexterity and range of expression made him one of this country's finest pianists, in my humble opinion. I shall forever remember the day I was first mesmerised by his playing, when I caught him playing the organ in the Sir Reginald Ansett Hall, at Peninsula Grammar, where we both went to school. He was so supportive and encouraging of my vocal talent, in those years. I shall forever remember with the greatest fondness the many times he accompanied me from the piano. We are undoubtedly soulmates, and the flame of my love for him can never be extinguished. I love you, Lachlan, and feel so blessed that my life was graced by yours. May God bless you and keep you always. Until we meet again, my friend xoxoxo

You have to hand it to the French they know how to elevate the organ to a monumental high. It is not possible to attain a higher level.

This is the best recording of this piece I have heard. Tempo is just right (too often the tempo is on the brisk side) and wonderful registration. The organ at Gloucester sounds fantastic.

This is nice, as "modern music," however, the great composers employed a system of theme-and-variations for a reason... (from Canada)

Many a musician would wish he could compose something even remotely similar to what Daniel seems to be just shaking out of his sleeves while improvising ... No wonder he was appointed Organiste Titulaire of one of the greatest and grandest organs ever built !!

Nope. This is not a composition. I used to 'make' improvised pieces - composition has forms pieces sometimes interact with each other. Meanwhile impro is a free chain of inspired 'hints' oe gags. Another question if I can impro being surrended by spectators..

My father, (very dead now), was taught to play the organ at Temple Church by George Thalben Ball when my father was a chorister there, and lived in residence at The City of London School. Dad went on to earn his degree from London University and became a very successful research chemist. I was most fortunate. His only fault, or misfortune so-to-speak, was he knew he was a genius and that fact made him a very lonely man. In all my life with him I only ever saw him talking with ONE friend. I feared him, I loved him, and I miss him terribly.

Just noticed this. I have the BBC Music Magazine it comes from. The performance is magnificent. Stunning virtuosity used solely to bring the score to life, which is exactly what happens in great performances of Liszt's piano music. Tempo wise he gets everything right and avoids the over-reverential torpor of so many others. Interestingly Jennifer Bate is even faster, but doesn't sound so energised.
