When I was at college we were taught how to put a bend on 4” lead pipe using a bossing stick and wooden bobbins to keep the shape. At 75 now I’m not sure if I could still do it. Never had to do it on site as plastic was in and taking over, thank goodness

Exactly mate, not all customers have money to repipe it or go above and beyond they just want the problem fixing at the end of the day
@actorlyric
@actorlyric Күн бұрын
Yes we would make those lead bends from a straight piece of 4" lead pipe , we would boss the lead pipe to the back of the proposed bend then almost flatten it , rinse and repeat then we'd use snatch & bobbins ( Google that) to reform the pipe . Then the end of it we'd wipe a brass ferrule that would then be the connection for the pan which would either be filled with red lead or neat cement with either yarn or brown paper . That is an art form and sorts the men from the boys. With regards to identifying whether it's asbestos or not , it has specific bulbous joints with no ears on the fittings like cast iron does. Although you're wearing a mask the fibres will get into your clothes and then transfer to other things such as your kids when they might sit on your lap when you come home from work before you take your work clothes off. Best thing to do next time is to buy a few pairs of disposable overalls and then once done chuck them away. They used asbestos alot after the war and in tbe 50's as it was a cheap commodity and lots of other things were built, guttering, soffits, corrugated roofs, pre fab garages. Obviously boiler flues . More dangerous are the asbestos rop3 seals on older boilers when disturbed for servicing especially on older potterton neta heat boilers etc. If you're working inside with it and have to cut it, have a water spray bottle and spray on it whilst cutting with a Hacksaw as opposed to a spinner as it doesn't create too much fibres flying off into the air.
@SmartPipePlumbing

Thank you mate I was hoping someone would answer that. It’s definitely an art form that has died now. So fair play to you old school plumbers for doing it. If I’d of had to cut it I’d of walk away from the job luckily it all just pulled apart

@@YNWA-oq5uf many thanks I've done close to 50yrs installing. Trained on lead caulk drainage , lead sheet roof work. Copper and nuralite roofing. New build in the 80's which was like the wild wild west ! A real eye opener for me. I've always held high standards from hiw I was taught . Today's plumbing is easier for sure , sadly the quality of installations is dire. It's all shut your eyes and chuck it in. No finesse anymore or pride. I know there are some quality guys out there installing. When did it come to installers doing it all one handed for likes saddens me, the manufacturers lap it up and throw merch at them and glorify them. I'd say about 5 or 6 on socials are decent. Who take pride in what they do and go the extra mile. The rest are chuck it in merchants . Sadly it shows the youngsters the wrong way to do it. But hey not my problem anymore time to hand the batten over.

@@SmartPipePlumbing remember back in the 70's it wasn't just asbestos soil systems there was nuralite( pitch fibre) stacks and galvanised welded ones also. There were also alot of 3" stacks as it was cheaper to do as there were syphonic pans fitted back then which as we k ow suck the contents out and were sold as quiet flushing . Mainstay of toilets in the states are syphonic . You might come across the odd one now and again. Lots of victorian stuff still fitted in parts of Brighton where I'm from. Only advice I'd give you guys now , is don't forgo quality over cheap as chips stuff ( Victoria plumb) if you sell it correctly it'll raise your quality of incoming business. You install cheap you'll get cheap customers. You install quality you'll get quality customers.
