I'm pretty sure the model 48 was built or at least designed before the OV-10. I'm sure it was one of those political things where the best design doesn't necessarily win the bid. In this case it looks like the best design won, but the company that did the designing and research didn't. This is nothing new, it has happened time and again. In cases where contracts are awarded by the government we need a different process that gets rid of the ability to buy a contract, and sometimes the design too !

By the time the project was cancelled they had virtually perfected the design. With no traditional tail rotor instead using a ducted fan similar to a NOTAR system they probably could have attained 300mph. Admittedly the very early prototypes did have some issues but they had virtually all been resolved by the end of the program. 😎🇦🇺👍

Not just made of titanium, but RUSSIAN titanium. The CIA made a secret deal to purchase bulk titanium from a third party country who bought it from Russia.

EF-4D AWW Prototype 😍 Tho It Never Became Operational and It Was Decided To Base The “AWW” Project on Much Newer ( at the time ) F-4E Rather Than Older F-4Ds and Result of That Would Be The F-4G Wild Weasel V We All Know ( Early F-4G and EF-4D In This Post Use Same The Equipment , Mainly The AN/APR-38 , However Its Transition From F-4D To F-4E Wasn’t Hassel Free and Major Problems and Obstacles Popped Out Of the Blue Immediately and delayed the project by 8 years iirc )

We used to show this movie when I was an instructor at Chanute Fire School in the mid 70s. I could probably recite the entire movie if I had to.🤣🤣

My dad and grandpa directly contributed to the development of this system at CONVAIR. They were brave heroes eho scarificed their health for the benefot of the program. They were instrumental to the program, one might say. They were the ejection dummies.

I saw this plane in 1972 at Lambert Field. I was getting my Boy Scouts Aviation merit badge and was going to go up in a Beech V tailed Bonanza. If that wasn't cool enough, here come the Eagle in that hi Viz paint scheme out from the McDonell Douglas hangar. I watched transfixed as it taxied by, with two Missouri Air Guard F4 Phantoms trailing it to fly chase. He took off, snapped the gear up and went straight up. The poor F4s had to spiral up after it, leaving black exhaust for miles. He started pulling a contrail, rolled it over and headed for Illinois. I stood there slack jawed, almost forgetting I was going up myself. I will never forget that.
