Great review, we watched this before going last week. One update though. The check in process has improved! we pre-checked in before arriving with all the passport info etc. Because of this it took less than 5mins!

Hi Johnny I've recently built a pond its just about finished I've spent quite a bit on it, I've got some fish in a big tub I got gifted off someone, I'm just wondering is it too late in the year to start the pond up or do you think it will be OK? Many thanks Ricky.

Hi mate sounds great. I personally don’t see a problem starting a pond up now, maybe not ideal but I would honestly ask someone with a better level of expertise, like your local koi dealer or something like that mate. Im no expert I’m still a beginner. Good luck

So, in general a pH of anything above 6 and below 8 is completely fine long term for carp and not harmful in any way, being slightly into the acidic side of things can actually be helpful as it prevents the less toxic ammonium from converting into the far more toxic ammonia. A lower pH can also reduce the chances of algae blooms so don't get caught up in thinking 'acid' is a scary word (in terms of melting stuff, alkaline substances act in exactly the same fashion. If you've ever used lime mortar and burned your skin you'll know exactly how). The downside of being slightly acidic is that it slows the whole nitrogen cycle down, organic material won't break down as efficiently However, if the pH rapidly changes or is prone to swings this will cause discomfort or even death so your kH, or buffer, is far more important than the pH overall because it maintains stability. A good method of keeping a good buffer and a neutral/alkali pH balance is to use chalk (calcium carbonate) gravel as a substrate, it'll slowly dissolve over time providing an excellent long term buffer.
@koifishjohnny

Hi mate, thanks for the awesome and informative message. I liked reading this, I did not know about the chalk. Also real interesting hearing about PH as tbh mate mine is about 8.2 and always the same. Cheers mate 🙏

@@koifishjohnny As long as you keep it below 9 and relatively stable you'll be fine. Acidosis tends to happen around 5.5 and alkalosis tends to happen around 9.5 I use agricultural lime on my lake because it's the cheapest and most easily available carbonate source (about a ton per acre) but you can use all sorts of things like limestone, crushed oyster shells, dolomite etc. They are very slow release and work best in running water if available. If it's stable and the fish are happy I probably wouldn't go messing around with it though. My lake is a 600+ year old estate lake of about 2 acres that has been rather neglected over the last 30 years (surrounded by trees and a couple of feet of horrible, stinky silt in places) and I'm currently in the process of restoring it to health on a shoestring budget.

I found your video today because i have noticed the dreaded pine needles on one of my koi and being a relative novice was looking for an answer.I have had the fish for 3 years ,but when i look back i think there has been some tell tale signs.Like you i am saddened losing a fish ,i am not a fanatic,but enjoy a fish[koi]pond.Perhaps i should have gone to my local dealer for what would have seemed to be an insignificant question.You have made me realise how important or not an insignificant question could lead to.Sorry for your loss of a lovely fish and best wishes in the future.

@@koifishjohnny Hi johnny, yeah it’s a tricky one mate, especially for your (our) style of pond, doesn’t lend itself for adding natural plants to it. Perhaps an idea would be to construct an additional area at the back, almost like a small raised feeder pond, that you could load up with plants and could then feed back in to the pond via the water blade I’m sure you had at the back of the pond.. Just a thought, but as always, costs to build it.. 💷💷💷 🤦🏼‍♂️🤬

Instead of the zip ties can you not drill a small hole into the side of the pond top..small screw into the hole..string or wire round the screw and into the basket. The problem with tying them down is what happens when you do a water change and the water level drops ? Duck weeds spreads like nothing else..need to keep it under control.
