Maybe you can compare this „transcending-the-ego-thing“ to stop smoking cigarettes, because it’s not an active process but totally passive. You simply avoid doing something which is unhealthy. Nevertheless it’s hard for most people to „just“ let go the own ego as it is to „simply“ stop smoking. I wonder why there are no likes or comments here yet and I wanna mention that „hardcore zen“ is an absolute must-read, best zen book next to Suzuki’s „beginners mind“ and Dogen‘s stuff, i think. I can’t say why I never read any of his books although I checked some of them at a store.
