Being a huge fan since ‘63, and being really familiar with ALL of these albums, I have to disagree with more than a few. Little Deuce Coupe- A Summer Days(and Nights) should be an S, while Today w/b an A. Wild Honey-C, Sunflower-S Friends- B MIU- E 15 Big Ones- D Love You- E Beach Boys- B it does have some really good songs(Where I Belong, Getcha Back) I know this is 4 years later from your video, but I just felt strongly on these differences. Good video!

Personally, my favourite track from Adolescent Sex is "Transmission" and my favourite from Obscure Alternatives is "....Rhodesia", which just goes to show that we have completely different tastes and that there's plenty of room for debate! I'm not very fond of Japan's first two albums, on which David Sylvian's voice isn't quite up to scratch yet. My n°1 Japan album is still Quiet Life, where I love all the tracks (with "Halloween" at the top of the list). I'd put Gentlemen Take Polaroids at n°2 because Rob Dean takes a back seat on this one. "My New Career" is my favourite track on the album. My n°3 is Tin Drum, which is more synthetic overall (with "Still Life in Mobile Homes" as my favourite track). I never really got into Rain Tree Crow because the album is more ambient in nature, although I like the genre (but I prefer, for example, the ambient instrumentals on David Sylvian's double album Gone to Earth). "Every Colour You Are" is my favourite Rain Tree Crow track.

Adam Franklin and the other guitarist tend to also use altered tunings, rather than the standard tuning. Which makes their songs a bit more challenging to figure out.

Just found this great interview. I would like to say that John is a true master, as a musician and as a person. I have worked with him and I can tell his wisdom and attitude toward life goes as far as his music mastery. His vision of the guitar is a treasure for any player cause when you go, he already went all the way and back couple of times. I´m sure anyone who has been around him agrees with me. I´m really looking forward to perform with him again very soon.

You should make video about band called "Trollin Withdrawal",this is the band of that guy who talks about viruses at the end of the track "Wait Forever", he also sing in "Torr's Empathy Jam" track. This band is way more mysteriously, its really a big rabbit hole. I can share you what i know about it, if you interested.

I picked up Skylarking not long after and enjoyed it quite a bit but never explored their back catalogue until much later. However, I did pick up nearly all of their subsequent albums when they came out. * I really fell in love with the quirky herky-jerky early stuff. It was a bit irritating at first, but I found that alcohol really unlocked this music for me. To quote "Meccanik Dancing" - "alcohol is an easy key." This is not me saying that alcohol (or any drug) is necessary to enjoy this music. It just helped me appreciate it by putting me in the right mindset. * White Music is indeed a good drinking album. Frantic, bizarro post punk/New Wave/What Have You with some excellent rhythms. However, I have some issues with the title. They originally wanted to call the album "Black Music" in reference to "black comedy." When that was rejected (rightly so), they went with White Music which was supposed to reference "white noise" - and I think they would have been better off calling it that. The title imports an uncomfortable racial element, although this is undeniably white music made by white people. And what is with that cover? Seems to be some sort of pro-gay message, what with Andy Partridge bending over towards the camera with arrows on his pants pointing up to his ass while his bandmate suggestively stands there with his finger on his mouth. I'm very pro-gay so this is not a problem for me, but it's kinda weird, and weird that no one seems to talk about it. * I'm crazy about the cover of "All Along the Watchtower." The bass is funky as hell, the mouth harp is off the chain, and the vocals are completely unhinged. This thing gets me dancing like a crazed rooster. I thought Hendrix had the final word on this song, but no. * I'm a fan of Barry Andrews, the keyboardist on the first two albums. And Colin Moulding is probably one of my favorite bass players. * These guys are melodic masters, and as such they occasionally drift off into sing-songy territory, but in most cases, this doesn't annoy me. * Mummer introduces some cool new sounds, but the songs aren't very catchy. "In Loving Memory of a Name" is fun though, and very good. * The Big Express is really good but with no major standouts, and points off for the weird baby talk lyrics. * 25 O'Clock is my number one because I think it's perfect and every song is 5 stars. I don't mind that it's short. I hear people complaining all the time about long albums. Then enjoy a short one muthafukkas! Anyway, this album is a blast, the songs are exceptional, and they really nail the 60s psyche pop influence. In particular, Magical Mystery Tour is an obvious inspiration. * Skylarking is positively brilliant, undoubtedly their best produced album, but some of it is a bit limp and wimpy for my tastes. And I had the American version with "Dear God" which I think is markedly superior. But since that version doesn't count, it hurts the album to some degree, and I might've even ranked it higher. Still 5 stars, though. "Mermaid Smiled" is a nice jazzy tune, but it can't hold a candle to "Dear God." Which also has a supercool violin solo! * Psonic Psunspot is a fantastic continuation of what they were doing on 25 O'Clock, but it takes second place because the second side isn't as strong as the phenomenal first side. * I used to be at 2 stars for Nonsuch. Truth be told, I found the album annoying. I love the opener "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead," but it felt like a bait and switch because the rest of the album doesn't really rock like that. Much of it is too twee for my tastes and it gets preachy in places. But today, I'll give it credit for having some good songs. "Books Are Burning" in particular went from "meh" to "very good" and it's got a great guitar solo. * I think it's fair to say the trumpet is XTC's favorite brass instrument, considering how often we hear it in their music. * I love this band!!! Cheers mates!!!!!!!!!! Top 20 songs: 20) Runaways (English Settlement) 19) Helicopter (Drums and Wires) 18) Vanishing Girl (Psonic Psunspot) 17) Season Cycle (Skylarking) 16) Bike Ride to the Moon (25 O'Clock) 15) That Is the Way (Drums and Wires) 14) Making Plans for Nigel (Drums and Wires) 13) Crowded Room (Go 2) 12) Radios in Motion (White Music) 11) Spinning Top (White Music) 10) Meccanik Dancing (Oh We Go!) (Go 2) 09) Statue of Liberty (White Music) 08) Collideascope (Psonic Psunspot) 07) Complicated Game (Drums and Wires) 06) What in the World?? (25 O'Clock) 05) The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead (Nonsuch) 04) Mayor of Simpleton (Oranges and Lemons) 03) One of the Millions (Oranges and Lemons) 02) Summer's Cauldron/Grass (Skylarking) 01) Dear God (Skylarking - American version) Honorable mention - All Along the Watchtower (White Music)

For me they should be ranked in phases: A.Debut (trying to get a sound) : Confusion is sex and the other more rare before (Sonic Youth) B.Constructionnist phase (being more and more structured from album to album) : Bad Moon, Evol, Sister, Daydream C.Peak phase ( doing what they do best ) : Goo, Dirty, Experimental D.Deconstructionnist phase (being purposely less and less structured from album to album): Washing, Thousands, Ghost (Ghost having strangely a vibe similar to Bad Moon... the circle has closed) E.Tail of the Hurricane : In the last four albums, they start to repeat themselves and get less and less creativity... still with some highlight of what they do best. I would rank C first and B/C second and only bother with A/E when i'm bored and need something else

My Ranking: 1. Treasure: Incredible album. All songs are strong and beautiful. Could listen to this anytime and fall in love all over again. 2. Head Over Heels: In my opinion the most solidly gorgeous album out there. When I first listened to them, this was an album way down there. However, as I have matured, it’s the album I find myself coming back to the most. 3. Garlands: I absolutely LOVE this album. I own the CD extra long version. It used to be my favorite. However, it is a specific mood for me. I need to be ready to take it in to experience it fully. 4. Heaven Or Las Vegas: BEAUTIFUL tracks here. Not, in my opinion, as strong as the first two. Not as complex and layered as Treasure and not as edgy as Head Over Heels, but beautiful album. Garlands overtakes this one due to its complexity. Good album for the summer. 5. Blue Bell Knoll: Great album. Lots of variety and flows in between the songs. Solid. 6. Victorialand: Great album. Gorgeous vocals and super atmospheric. 7. The Moon and The Medlodies: An extension of Victorialand almost. Beautiful album, but not quite as good as VL. 8. Milky And Kisses: Super solid. Just isn’t as incredible as the top 6, but incredibly solid. 9. Four-Calendar Cafe: Couple songs I love. Feels a little redundant but is still an incredible album.

Enjoyed this thoroughly. Catherine Wheel really do feel like a secret gem buried under a lot of better known acts from that period. They never did top those first two albums, but I have been on a deep dive into their later catalog, and finding that while they only had two albums that were start to finish flawless, the lesser albums have individual tracks that more than make up for all the skip over material. Lately I have been addicted to Rob's solo album, which has some pretty fantastic moments. I dimissed it largely on first listen, but I had to be in the right place to really appreciate the material I think.

Nice list! It must be hard to narrow down the albums from '78 to only 5. I'd want to put the Cars debut on there as well. I also have some "favorites" from '78 - Elvis Costello - This Year's Model, and Rolling Stones Some Girls are also great. The number of genres, and sub-genres spawned during this time is staggering, and unmatched in my mind.

Thank you! It is hard to narrow down, usually I’ll narrow down my top 10 and then do process of elimination from there. Some years are harder then others but this year was pretty easy for me to narrow down personally. And totally agree, this year had a stylistic explosion for sure. Thanks for watching!
