And this is, I think, why the 14- and 16-segment alphanumeric displays you sometimes saw from the 1970s to the 1990s, and anything more complex, have mostly faded away: they were just too close in complexity to the point where you might as well use a dot matrix, and those were far more versatile and could give you really nice-looking fonts. The simplest really common DMD fonts use 5x7 pixels per character, which is 35 "segments". The seven-segment numeric display still survives in a lot of devices because it's just so simple, but everything beyond that tends to yield to some kind of dot matrix or display screen.
