That Erard sounds gorgeous! A little too much compression on some of the louder parts of the recording but still ❤

It's interesting to see how most of people here are for Pleyel which, as we all know, was favored by Chopin, while Liszt hated Pleyel for being too quiet for playing in the concert halls. It's understandable. We now have microphones and yes, for intimate saloon playing Pleyel was better for sure. 😁

Is this exciting sound becaus of no crossing strings. I know the concert piano player Martin Oei liks this piano, he told me it gave him more expression and no disturbing frequences because of no crossing strings: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jbKJatd-uZOwZWg.htmlsi=mgfrGFYm25o9WyUQ

What is the reason for the different sound? A short explanation would be nice and informing. It lies within the construction, doesn't it? But what exactly?

what was involved in the restoration work of these pianos? was the original soundboard preserved?
@BizziClavicembali
@BizziClavicembali 10 ай бұрын
We found it in quite conditions. The soundboard is the original one and the instrument has been restringed with appropriate strings (talking about material and diameters). We had to work on the mechanic and the felts had been refelted with historical felts.

The comparison test wasn't done properly. Identical shorter passages played on each piano would have would have been far more beneficial to the listeners. This video was a great idea but it seems that no serious thought was put into achieving the actual comparison objective for anyone other than the pianist who gets to touch the instruments.

Of course Pleyel sounds far better as Erard. But it's seems to me both instruments are still dead. Whether the micros were ill placed and/or the temperament was tuned to equal one but the resonance is missing wich would give real life and colors to the pianos. Can you please tell me wich temperament is used?

It's the first restored Pleyel I hear that doesn't go too much honky-tonk. I think most of the others no longer have the soundboard in a good state (being so old), I doubt anything can be done in that case.

Important to note that whenever they restore these instruments they replace the original lighter hammers with modern heavy ones… so this comparison is essentially useless as they sounded nothing like this in Chopin’s day
@BizziClavicembali
@BizziClavicembali Жыл бұрын
Hi, if I may what you say is not correct. Both these instrument has the original hammers and the underlayers of the hammers (the leather ones) are original while the felt has been replaced with a felt of the same density an material of the originals and stretched by hand one by one.

@@BizziClavicembali Well, if what you say is true then Chopin’s piano sounds more closely to modern pianos than I thought, which is encouraging because it means his sound that we read in historical accounts is within reach.
