Brain-wide functional connectivity artifactually inflates throughout functional magnetic resonance imaging scans www.nature.com/articles/s41562-024-01908-6 Abstract Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a central tool for investigating human brain function, organization and disease. Here, we show that fMRI-based estimates of functional brain connectivity artifactually inflate at spatially heterogeneous rates during resting-state and task-based scans. This produces false positive connection strength changes and spatial distortion of brain connectivity maps. We demonstrate that this artefact is driven by temporal inflation of the non-neuronal, systemic low-frequency oscillation (sLFO) blood flow signal during fMRI scanning and is not addressed by standard denoising procedures. We provide evidence that sLFO inflation reflects perturbations in cerebral blood flow by respiration and heart rate changes that accompany diminishing arousal during scanning, although the mechanisms of this pathway are uncertain. Finally, we show that adding a specialized sLFO denoising procedure to fMRI processing pipelines mitigates the artifactual inflation of functional connectivity, enhancing the validity and within-scan reliability of fMRI findings.

My sister was wearing a special belt with a metal buckle. We were next to the MRI machine when I was removing the belt. The magnetic field was so strong it was pulling on the belt, like an invisible hand. It was a fascinating experience, but the MRI tech told me to move away from the machine. I asked the tech what would happen if the belt entered the MRI. She said it would not be possible for me to pull it out. She would have to hit the emergency shut off switch. But in order to restart the machine requires two engineering technicians all day. It's an expensive process. Normally, the MRI is left running all the time, even when the clinic is closed.

Entry level MRI machine starts at $225,000 and can go up to $500,000. These guys must really have deep pockets if they can afford to replace one.

I got my foot caught in the field, I couldn't get it out nor could I remove my shoes, so I had to SCRAM the machine. The hospital was less than sympathetic.

When a mri is quenched, the magnet looses it's power. In such a case, you can easily store guns near a mri. Don't talk about stuff that you don't understand

There is, but pressing the emergency stop on a mri is very expensive and takes it out of Service for.. Weeks.
@jacobcammer6282
@jacobcammer6282 6 ай бұрын
@@lucariolps277 that’s dumb maybe they should build like a metal wall that can be moved up and down and block the magnetic forces, to have the off switch basically kill the machine is bananas it’s like the Death Star with that one weakness
@lucariolps277
@lucariolps277 6 ай бұрын
@@jacobcammer6282 well the issue is that the mri magnets are always on to a extent. The emergency stop basically blows the emergency valve and releases all the liquid helium that is used for Cooling. That basically then causes the magnets to lose their power. That's why it then takes weeks to repair it. You gotta fill it back up with Helium and repair it. A movable Metall wall wouldn't be of much use either. If something gets sucked in, it's stuck there.. That Metall wall wouldn't help. Not to mention you would need to be careful with Material choice. The Metall has to be non magnetic

i once worked at a factory that refurbished medical trailers with ct scanners and mri machines. every time i would sweep around the gantry, i would have to keep a real tight grip on the metal broom so it wouldn't get sucked in and launched. sometimes i would grab the handle real tight and just hold the broom up to it and watch it move on its own. definitely not safe, but god damn was it worth it.
