I visited here perhaps a little before you did. I went on the Sunday/weekend tour. I was the only one that day and the head guide came up to me and said I've got the keys and where do you want to go? Needless to say all was visited. We went to the solitary confinement rooms and one overlooked the town. He said it gave the inmate a view of the town unlike the norm so perhaps wasn't as punishing as you might think. I noticed in the museum a chart of home runs etc by nationality. The British attempts dwarfed the others by a factor of hundreds! The guide told me that many German visitors go there as it's famous for its zoo etc and are surprised by its WW2 history.

Thank you for this informative, detailed film. I've been an F1 fan for 45 years yet Jim raced long before my time. Through old film and books read, he clearly was one of the most naturally talented and loved champions. Just following the 56th anniversary of his passing, your film was very welcome and interesting to watch. I doubt I'll ever get the opportunity to visit the crash site myself hence your film is all the more appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to research and make it,

When the Hockenheimring was re-built, my grandfather just said: Then, at least Jim Clark has a quiet resting place. Even if Clark loved roaring engines.

I can remember driving over the Dam in 1973. There was two halves of a bouncing bomb on far side. We had a picnic in the snow that day; sitting beside it. Strange site and feeling to the place and the scar on dam was very evident.

Why in the World would this be a thing? Are you goulish? Wierdo...Oh you are going to settle the science of what caused the Greatest Driver of All Time to perish into the trees sideways at 150 mph? Get a life ....well ATTEMPT to...for people like you...that will more than enough

Just stumbled upon this - thanks Nick, great job. I visited in 2016 trying to find proof my grandfather was in Colditz because we have a portrait of him painted in there and the wonderful Steffi could only verify the stamps on the back as being Colditz and SS censorship stamps. This still wasnt proof for Australian War Records Unfortunately but it was a step closer than we had achieved in 50 years. Thanks to renewed interest and brilliant british research and journalism the final proof came out and Frank was recognised as a Colditz POW. A shame his own country considered a mere private (also a very talented escape artist) not worthy of finding out about so I am very thankful to see Britain stepped up a couple of years later. Thanks again

Hi Nick, thx a lot for posting this video. Even I'm just living a few minutes away to this place I never took the chance to visit it before since my ten years old son asked me in 2020 to go there. So we watched your video, took our bikes and brought some little things to the place where Jim had this fatal accident. A very nice quite place as a reminder for the best driver of all time. Every year in April we visit this place now.

I visited the dam while stationed at RAF Gutersloh in 1980. It felt very strange to be there considering RAF Scampton was my first operational station in 1975. There was a elderly German we spoke to who was in tears. When he knew we were British, he kept asking “why did you bomb it?” During the very hot summer of 1980, the answer to your question is you can see the scare of the new build. Thanks for the Video, none of what you saw was there when we went.

JIM CLARK - By far the greatest driver ever - no doubt. He is and was the Best of the Best. No other driver in history until today was so superior as Clark. This man is the Olymp of driving - the Michelangelo of racing - a dynamic art at the highest level. So smooth, so precise, so fast....simply out of this world. One, who won in Spa by 5 minutes (!) in monsoon rain with only one hand at the wheel (!) because of gearbox trouble...One, who takes back a complete lap (!) in Monza and back into the lead... One, who took pole on the original 22,8 km Nürburgring track by 9 (!) seconds and more....One who won Indy by 2 whole (!) laps...For eternity and by lightyears unmatched in the sport. That`s just four examples of his mesmeric unique genius...

Over a 100 million years when these concrete goliaths will be the only thing left of our civilisation, future archeologists from the squid people that will rule earth, will wonder what and who on earth could have built these things. A race of supreme giants.

It's amazing how much of the old circuit has gradually but almost completely disappeared. I presume that the racing surface was removed to some extent, leaving soil that quickly attracts vegetation. Without seeing the aerial photos, you would never know that the race track had ever been there.

Excellent video! Both filmed and narrated with the due dignity, empathy, and respect such a video needs to made with. The accident is yet another tragic example of 'mechanical failure' that should never have happened imo. According to Wikipedia; 'the cause of the crash was never definitively identified, but investigators concluded it was most likely due to a deflating rear tyre'. Wiki adds; 'There was initial speculation as to whether the accident was caused by a driver error or a deflating rear tyre, and the Lotus was investigated thoroughly by aircraft crash investigators for three weeks. Many drivers including Surtees and Brabham were convinced that the crash was caused by a deflating rear tyre and were adamant that it was not a driver error-simply because they believed Clark was not capable of making such a mistake. According to Andrew Marriott of the classic journal Motor Sport who was covering the race as a young reporter "Deaths in the sport were a regular occurrence in those days, but surely someone of Clark's sublime talent and skill? People reckoned that the rear tyre had deflated, and there is another theory that the mechanical metering unit on the Cosworth FVA engine had seized and caused Clark to crash'. What amazes me is the amount of power and speed Clarke's Lotus 48 delivered. It [Cosworth FVA] produced 225 bhp (168 kW) at 9000 rpm. The engine dominated the category [F2] until 1971, and was also used in sports car racing in 1.8 Litre form as the "FVC". Imo those power figures are pretty impressive especially when powering the 420 kg (930 lb) Lotus 48 F2 racing car. Jim Clark's tragic death also reminds me our Kiwi [New Zealander] racing legend Bruce McLaren and his tragic death 2 June 1970 (aged 32) in a Can Am racing car, also way too early in life. The city where I live here in New Zealand has an international motor racing circuit named 'Teretonga Park Raceway' - the word 'Teretonga' is a Maori word and it translates in English to; 'swift south'. I enjoy photography and here's a link to some Formula 5000 cars [my favorite single-seater racing car] that raced at the track in 2013: www.flickr.com/photos/35707376@N00/albums/72157633939548702
