I much prefer LINDA EDER'S performance of this song....Deborah turned it into something else and..Shouting doesn't always Successfully imply passion, conviction or nuance.

Usually they would train to stretch their voice broadway way but if the audience loves their voice as is then that’s okay

Both Deborah and Linda are the best vocally. Those two women are meant to be on a Broadway stage and they both have the talent to do so.

Her voice for pop and R&B is wonderful. She killed in AIDA. When she did this show, she was tired from touring it and you could tell. Her voice was all over the place, both pitch and key. She'd power her way through the show and it didn't do her any favors. I know it's tough to compare her to someone like Eder- who this part was written for- but Frank's music is better served by vocalists who have a healthy, full open belt and the ability to mix head/chest quickly and properly. Deborah did not have this when she was doing this show.

I find this 9 years later LOL< For those of you surfing around. As mentioned below in the comments I wish the poster had read the credits as I do have a credit for singing for Wendy McKenna - she did not sing in the movie nor does she sing today. Not her thing, she's an actress.

People in these comments are mad at Deborah for not singing these songs like a white girl. She sounds amazing period. The point of being a unique performer is to bring something different to the stage.

I don't actually have any issue with her voice in this (and my wife and I are very familiar with Jekyll and Hyde as she worked merchandising for the original Broadway production, so we saw it many times). I don't even mind the pop-style singing. She has a wonderfully powerful voice (even if she was pushing her voice a bit in this particular recording - it happens to us all, sometimes, when performing, so it is completely forgiven). My issue is that she is not connected at all to the music and lyrics. She breathes in the middle of sentences, indeed in the middle of a line of thought, which completely breaks the immersion. I don't see any real emotion there. I noticed the same thing when I watched her in "Dangerous Game," as well. But Linda Eder couldn't act herself out of a wet paper back when she first starred as Lucy. However, as the show ran, her performance improved by leaps and bounds and by the end of her run, her acting was matching the quality of her voice - she was absolutely mesmerizing. It's clear Deborah Cox is talented and I think condemning her for this small recording is too harsh without seeing the entire production. I realize the show was 4 years ago, but now that Ms. Cox is touring in "The Bodyguard," her name has come up again and so I was googling her to see what she did in the past. :)

SHE WAS INSANELY AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! Every Artist brings something special to the stage, whether they are STRICTLY Broadway Performers, Pop Singers turned Broadway Stars and so on. Her presence on that stage was MIND BLOWING!!! Every note that EASILY flowed out of her mouth was done with such ease, grace and power that when she held that note from 1:03 to 1:16 you could literally feel it in you. To say she was PITCHY is such an odd statement too, who are you, Randy Jackson?? SHE WAS INCREDIBLE, Thank You Deborah for singing your heart out on stage, My Husband and I thought you were ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL!!!!

I saw it in prebroadway previews in Chicago and she has an amazing voice. I was fortunate enough to also see it in the 90's when Linda Eder played the original Lucy. Deborah is a great singer, but I think Linda had her heart into the part a lot more than Deborah with her actions during this song

I always thought these songs had a soulful edge to them and wondered what an African American Lucy would sound like. Considering that Frank Wildhorn wrote "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" for Whitney Houston, I can see why the music of Jekyll and Hyde works so well with Deborah's rich tones. I think Deborah Cox sounds beautiful and her voice is very strong if not as ethereal as Linda's. I love this fresh new take on the musical.

wow a fucking critic get the fuck outta here. Shes amazing. She brought her style to broadway. Without it i wouldn't even be listening most singers sound bleak. I believe the words you meant formulate in regards to her voice was...SOUL

She's a beautiful woman with a tremendous voice but this song was butchered. Sorry but maybe next time.
@alittlebitmuddled10 жыл бұрын
It's very clear she has a stunning voice and oodles of talent but I haaaaaated what she did to this song! The reason why I love this musical so much is how purely beautiful the songs are, I don't like how 'pop-like' it became with how she embellished and decorated the notes. I know they modernised it but I don't think that worked at all for the entire style and plot of the musical. But I'm just happy they brought it back, and if that's what they had to do to do it, then so be it. This show doesn't get nearly enough of the attention it deserves.

She is a very talented singer and I saw her in this prebroadway in Chicago. If someone hasn't seen the original in the 90s with Linda Eder, this was a good show. But as someone that did see Linda Eder in this in the 90's, Cox wasn't nearly as good as Linda. Linda has the perfect voice for this part, has the acting down a lot better than Cox and Linda's heart was realy into the character on stage, I don't think Deborah's was. Deborah is a great singer but not a good actress
@jamesteroh10 жыл бұрын
I agree completely. I saw this in prebroadway in Chicago and also saw the original 90's version with Linda Eder. Cox is talented and has a great voice, but doesn't compare to Linda Eder. Linda Eder's voice was made for this role and she really had her heart in the part
@remyfacade2 жыл бұрын
Not sure how I feel about that. I agree to a point. Overall Deborah is a better Lucy aesthetically and had a better stage presence but Linda's voice is so different especially for an ingenue character and I will admit I find myself listening to Linda's version more than Debra I think I like Deborah's versions of new life better but the other songs Linda gets in hands down.
@Grax91110 жыл бұрын
i think she is an amazing singer, i just dont think she is right for this part. i dont like the fact she adds riffs and changes the song. it hurts the strength of this piece and it makes it feel like shes not really trying to be the character, but she is trying to show off her vocals.

I can't enjoy this version at all. I've never heard her in anything else so I'm not sure what she is capable of, but this version hurts my ears :/ When singing you should make it sound effortless, not strained. Does anyone know if any other musical projects she has done, just so I can judge for myself whether or not I like her voice? Maybe it's just this musical that I don't like her in.
