Besides having been an optician I was also a member of a local Lion's Club. If you haven't heard of us we work in the vision area in helping low income people obtain an eye exams and glasses. In fact i was a member before I became an optician. Long story how I became a member, but i will say that I was maybe one of the youngest to ever join. I was only 24 at the time. If you're interested in that story let me know and I will tell how it all happened. My first role was collecting donated glasses from a number of locations. mostly optical stores. I had about 48 locations i picked up from every other week. Every month i ended up collecting well over 150 - 250 pairs of glasses that were used for people that matched rather closely to the prescriptions of the glasses. Anyway I would always look through the donated glasses because kids would often throw new frames off the frame board in the donation boxes. So I couldn't help but notice some really interesting glasses. I came across hundreds of really nice "cat-eye" glasses with rhinestones on the corners. I also came across glasses that were in "drop-temple" frames. Have you ever seen any of those? But i also found well over hundred from around the late 30's or 40's that were thin gold wire frames with glass lenses and real ivory nose pads. I knew they had to be worth quite a bit just being antique. I even saw a pair just like the ones ai was picking up in the donation boxes in an antique store selling for $75.00 and this was back in the 70's. So I asked the people where I delivered the donated glasses to what they did with those gold glasses and a woman told me they were always excited to get those because they sent them off to be melted down for the gold. Okay that was fine until she told me that they got $1.00 for each pair. I was shocked , only a dollar? So from then on I picked those glasses out and took them home. I knew would have gladly given them $2.00 each. Anyway a few years later I happened to mention it to a young optician working in a local optical chain store because the owner had put up a display of glasses on a board with glasses form the 1800's and of course some like the ones I was saving. When I told her that I had quite few like the ones on the board she wanted to see some of them. So next time i went their i took a bag with about 15 or so in it to show her. She went through all of them and she tried on nearly every pair. Not all that easy to even put on or take off because they had cable temples. Do you know what those are? There very springy and they wrap around the ears. Back then a pair of glasses probably cost at least a weeks wages which was probably around $30.00. But in today's market tat would be equal to maybe $500.00. So with the lenses being glasses the last thing you would ever want to happen would be to have your glasses fall off and the lenses shatter. Anyway she begged me for a pair and at first I refused her, but then I thought it would be better to give her a pair because i could tell that she would take good care of them. I asked her what she would do with them and she said she would wear them. She said she would have her lab make her a pair of non-prescription lenses, since she didn't need glasses and then wear them for work. So I told her to pick out the pair she wanted. I did get a nice big hug from her a nd several more thank you's as well. I wasn't surprised at all when I went back two weeks later doing my collecting to see her wearing the glasses. I told her how nice she looked wearing them and asked her if the lab guy ad any problem making her lenses. The reason I asked that was because the lenses had to be drilled to hold the temples and frame together. The drilling can result in the plastic lenses cracking. She said the lab guy made several attempts to drill the lenses and each time the lenses cracked so he told her he couldn't do it for her. So she just decided to wear them with the lenses that were in them. She said she checked the prescription of the lenses and she was glad they didn't have any astigmatism correction in them because she was sure her eyes would be able to adjust to the prescription just fine otherwise. Actually when those glasses were made I don't think they knew much about prescriptions for astigmatisms at all. i never did ask her what the prescription was because at that time I didn't know all that much about prescriptions anyway. But she said she was already seeing perfect wearing them and they really very comfortable to wear. Anyway i slowly continued giving them away when I came across opticians that I could tell really appreciated them. I also kept a good number of really cute plastic framed glasses for a long while until i found out they were useless as far as replacing the lenses. I never gave it a thought that being plastic trying to heat the frame to remove the lenses and then reheating again to replace the new lenses the frame would be too brittle for that. I found that out from a young woman that worked at a Fredrick's of Hollywood store at the local mall. She was really into retro stuff. So when i mention those old "cat-eye" glasses she was extremely interested in seeing them. So I brought a small bag of those glasses to show her. Nit surprising she wanted all of them. I did tell her she could have one. She picked out a really cute pair and as luck would have it the store next door was a Lenscrafter's and even better she was good friends with the lab guy. She also wasn't a glasses wearer but she was now planning on being a glasses wearer. But just like what happened with the other girl. Two weeks later when i saw her she was wearing the glasses, but down her nose a bit. I could tell right away the lenses weren't changed because the glasses she picked out were lined bifocals. So the bifocal line was very visible. She told me when she asked her friend about making new lenses for her glasses he showed her how the frame had became yellowish in color meaning it would never make it though the heating process of replacing the lenses. He checked the prescription and told her the distance portion was quite weak and it was up to her if she wanted to wear them or not. He said the add, or reading segment could be a problem for trying to read or see through. So she wanted to wear them bad enough that she was willing to give them a try. After a couple months she had pushed her glasses up in the right position. She said seeing distance was never a problem at all and she thought she may have been needing glasses anyway. Because she was able to see signs a lot better wearing her glasses from the very first day. But things close up was a different story. But the more she was trying to read through the reading area the better it was getting. Sorry for such a long comment.

I'm a former optician, now retired. I'm also 72 and had been an optician for 38 years. But even though I only started around 1973 as an apprentice optician i still remember seeing many of the classic "cat-eye" glasses from the 60's. In the 70's the biggest thing was the thin round wireframe glasses that every teen girl seemed to be wearing along with their long blonde hair and floor length dresses. They were called "flower child's" or "hippie's" back then. A few years after that I was a member of the local Lion's Club and as you may know they do nice things for people needing glasses that can't afford them. A main part of my job was to go around and collect donated glasses from donation boxes in optical stores. These were glasses that people no longer wore due to a change in their prescription. People often saved their old glasses even though they were no longer of any use to them because they paid so much for them and they didn't want to just throw them out. I soon started saving many of the nicer glasses that I cane across in those boxes. I had over 65 pairs of glasses from the 30's and 40'. Those glasses were really really nice. They were much like what you see someone wearing in an old western movie. They were very small and had cable temples, I bet you don't know what that is, do you? Their glasses with a thin temple that has earpieces that are very flexible and actually wrap around the ears much like a hook shape. They were made to stay and come off while riding a horse I assume. They were semi-rimless with real ivory nose pads and the frame was actually 24 carat gold. I only have about 5 let now and I plan to keep them. Oh and they had glass lenses which they don't use anymore because it's much too dangerous to the eyes if they were get hit and the lens shattered it could blind a person. I'm sure many people were probably blinded due to their glasses being shattered. Those glasses are now worth around $350.00 if you ever see them in a auction house. I also had a rather large box of other interesting glasses from the late 50's and 60's. One of my favorite styles were a full frame all aluminum frame made by Tura It came in several colors. What was nice, unlike plastic frames that by now would be far too brittle to replace the lenses with new ones. Being aluminum those frames are probably still being used today by collector's. Have you been able to find any actual vintage glasses that you were able to put your prescription into?

Thank you for your comment Jim. I watch a lot of period piece movies and I have seen many glasses from years past from these movies. It is interesting to see how glasses have progressed over the years. I have donated many of my glasses over the years, so yes, you must of seen so many interesting styles being donated. I do not own any real vintage glasses but maybe someday I will.

@@thecottagethread Just remember if you find real vintage glasses and the frame is plastic the glasses will only be look for display purposes and not for having your prescription put into them. Plastic frames frames become more and more brittle after just a few years. But any metal frames or rimless styles should be fine to get your prescription put into them so you could wear them. After holding onto those glasses for a number of years when I would tell some of the younger female opticians and optical assistants about my collect of my old glasses they wanted to see some of them. So remember these glasses were considerably older than they were. They were very impressed with how well the glasses were made and how amazing the styles of the glasses were. Many of them were true "cat-eye" and had rhinestones in the upper corners of the frames. Not surprising that many of them said they would love to have a pair of glasses like the ones i was showing them. I soon started giving many of the glasses to the ones that clearly wanted a pair. I remember one young lady that worked in a high end optical store that the average price at the time was well over $500.00 in her store oved seeing some of my older glasses from the 30' and 40's that I mentioned to you. She didn't wear glasses herself but she said that if she had a pair of those glasses she would get non-prescription lenses put into them and wear them quite often. She said she though they would be perfect to wear with a nice warm sweater on cold winter days. She had tried on several pairs of the glasses and she loved how she looked wearing them and she did look really good trying them on. I told her that she could pick one out for herself as long as she promised to wear them after she got the lenses changed. Remember these glasses all had glass lenses in them. So wearing glasses with glasses lenses was a bit dangerous. She promised she would and she picked out the pair she liked best. Actually the frames were all very similar to each other only in different sizes. The main difference back then was the lenses were sometimes in a hexagon shape or some other shape. I didn't see her again until the fall when I was back picking up donated glasses from the donation box. I saw that she was working with a patient and had her back turned to me, but I thought it was her because she was wearing a sweater. As the patient got up and left she got up and turned around and i was happy to she her wearing the glasses I gave her. She came over and greeted me with a nice smile and said she was glad to see me. She told me she really liked her glasses and that she had bene wearing them nearly everyday along with different sweaters. I asked her if she had any problem with getting new lenses made for her glasses and she said when she took them to her lab guy he told her that having the original glass lenses in them made them more of a collector's item. But she still wanted to wear them as well as have them as a collector's item. She decided that since she was able to see rather will with the prescription in the glasses that she would try wearing them to see if her eyes would fully adjust to them. She said that she checked the prescription and they were only -.75 in both eyes and no cylinder (astigmatism) correction So after wearing them a few days she able to see perfect wearing them. She showed me her other pair of glasses she got from her store to wear on days when she isn't wearing her glasses from me. She had them made in the same -.75 prescription since that was what her eyes had become used wearing . So that cute pair of old glasses had made her a full time glasses wearer. I'm sure she is out their somewhere and still has those glasses to remember me by. Since this is the style you seem to want you should really consider finding several pairs of actual vintage glasses, have your prescription put into them and then wear those glasses as a part of that "look".
