Ben good morning....... noticed that you do not dry bird first before mounting.... what are the advantages of that process vs drying before mounting? thank you!
@ArtofTaxidermy15 сағат бұрын
Hi Steve … the advantages are , skin will stay moist through your the process, even after blow drying at the end because by then the skin is sewn closed , so I only blow dry the feathers and not the skin. It’s faster , because some of the feathers will dry by themselves while I’m handling it on the towel. I only blow dry turkeys before mounting due to their very large feathers and getting too heavy to handle.

If you flesh a bird but don’t have time to mount it how do you keep it fresh and not dried out
@garytatterton9461Күн бұрын
Would it be worth putting a drop of water in with syringe to flush it ?
@ArtofTaxidermyКүн бұрын
Hmm,, never thought of it. If the bird is fresh it usually flushes out fast and if it a dried out one, it usually flushes out more solidified.

I flush with acetone! Dissolve the fat! I don’t have an air gun so first I use a wire to remove most of it and then I flush with acetone until it comes out clear.

Which is better to do, use original skull or resin? Since I've seen skulls of brids who died long ago and I noticed the beak also loses colour, it may be different in this case cause they're not gonna be burried in the dirt but I just wanna know what's best & not make dumb mistakes
@ArtofTaxidermy2 күн бұрын
There are pros and cons to both..in my situation (lots of repetitive birds) casted ones are cleaner, quicker ... but I still use real skull when I have only one species once in a while. real skulls need to be touched up with some paint as well, otherwise their color will fade over time.

How do you dry a bird? Can you use a hairdryer? I've been looking up ways but I'm not 100% sure of everything as it's gonna be my first time, I had a baby bird that died so I'm gonna taxidermy him And how do you preserve bird legs? I saw someone saying you add this special liquid, but I can't buy anything online
@ArtofTaxidermy5 күн бұрын
You can use air compressor for drying and also there are bird feet preservatives you can buy off of major suppliers.

Please, keep doing that, it's very much appreciated by taxidermists like me that really care about the details, take the necessary time, and give the best of themselves to make the animals look as close as possible to what they were in life.

@ArtofTaxidermy14 күн бұрын
@@Sunsaintsandwaves if you can find one local would be the best.. but a merlin would be a great starter... couple of things are super important with small birds: delicate and functioning equipment (jess, Aylmery, gram scale with 10th of a gram accuracy, hood, or giant hood, and above all: DIET.. if you want your merlin, sharpshin or kestrel to survive, NEVER settle for less than natural food, : always go for starlings, sparrows, etc... never ever go for domestic qualis or easy to obtain meat that would be suitable for larger birds.. I used to buy dead starlings from Orchard trappers by hundreds and freeze them for the whole year.

@ArtofTaxidermy20 күн бұрын
Good question 😄 it doesn’t matter really. Just fill up your dish and use a little bit till it gets a little colour to the water. If you over use or under use , doesn’t hurt anything. As long as there is some in the water it helps with relaxing the skin.
