If I have it right my family had a share in the Hay cottage as we knew it, perhaps just before that time and I know at least during the war. The cottage I visited was on a site that had been divided from the land and ha been built by my Grandfather, my dad and my Uncle. My dad said the RIp had a variable pitch propeller that my Gramps found difficult to control, but who knows with tales. Some folks from Vermont had the Hay place when I was a kid and it was fun to play in and around, best swimming ever. So nice to see the lake as it was, it wasn't that much different in the 60s and 70s, less sailboats, more power boats.

Looking back we called the cottage the Kerr cottage and the cabin we had was purchased from another party but was adjacent to that place. Ripowam was in our family but I'm looking for the Hayes family info...

God rest her soul, Mrs. Dougherty was a magnificent storyteller. I had the pleasure of accompanying one of her ghost tours many years ago. I wish there were more film footage of her, for no one could spin a yarn like she could!

It was after Penn Station was demolished in the sixties that preservation took off. I was hoping Eric White's email was still current to hear more of what happened to the family that had Marchmont. My grandmother stayed here with her grandmother who was Joseph White's older sister.

Last Sunday, I walked up to the site (before our most recent "blizzard") after learning of its exact location form Eugene, a resident who knows so much about Winchendon. Amazingly, the Marchmont home seem to have no cellar (or it was filled in). I did find the cellar of a barn-like structure that sat behind it, though. There is still a yellow fire hydrant there at he site next to where the "castle" once stood.

I was told that it was demolished because the owners weren't using it, couldn't sell it and were tired of paying the high taxes on it. The person who told me this was around back in the day and his wife and mother in law actually worked for the whites as domestic staff.

What a shame! Winchendon is a poor town, that need the money, badly! They should have kept this beautiful piece of history and had tours! They make tons of money, in Newport, RI, with the mansion tours...the town just doesn't think!!!!

It is inconceivable that the USA has such flagrant disregard for irreplaceable architectural masterpieces such as this Castle. The Americans wantonly destroy and demolish everything of art and beauty..in every city and town. Why didn't the family preserve and live in this beautiful home?? If the Coliseum were in the USA, it would have long ago been destroyed to make room for a Walmart..or a parking lot!!! It's a disgrace.

I thought that the house was beautiful and never could understand why it was destroyed! I thought to myself...I think it would have hurt Nelson D. White to have known it was taken down, something that he worked so hard to build for his wife! Very, very odd. It is too bad it does not exist today, it could be a museum for the town.

Mr. White, do you have any photo's of any of the workers, I wondered if my great x 2 grandfather James Atkinson might be in any of them? We only have one photo of him!

My great great grandfather James Atkinson was hired by Nelson D. White from No. Lancashire cotton mills in No. England. He was a machinist. He moved to America with his wife Bridget (Walsh/Welch) Atkinson in 1867 or 68. My great grandfather Joseph W. Atkinson was their fourth child and first child born in America. He went on to marry Dina (Berard) Atkinson, who happened to be a babysitter at one time for the children of Nelson D. White. Her father, my great great grandfather also worked his grounds around the White Castle Mansion in Winchendon. I have photo's of Dina when she was the age when she would have babysat the children. She was very pretty. Dina lived a very long life of 97 years of age. She was also a very accomplished artist. I've always wondered if the White family had any photo's of the Glen Allan Mill that I could have copies of when my great x2 grandfather worked their as their machinist. I came to find out through doing my families history that James and Bridgets children also worked in the mill. Which I found very sad! But those were the times, and they must have needed the money badly. There son Joseph had a son named Philip W. Atkinson who went to Boston Nautical School back in 1920. He had an unbelievable maritime career that lasted till the mid 1960's. He played the stock market all those years (Wall St.), and died a multimillionaire! This was my father's father. But this is how our family began in America, and how it was tied into the White family. James Atkinson working at the Glen Allan Mill as a machinst, and my great grandmother being a babysitter for the children of Nelson D. White. Along with my great x2 grandfather Mr. Berard, working as a grounds keeper for Nelson D. White.

I spent nearly every summer in the late 1960's on Lake Sunapee, at my friends cottage on Garnet Hill Road. Thanks for rekindling my memories! Its nice to see the lake without all of today's mansions wedged in side to side. What part of the lake was this filmed on? Are you one of those kids?

@StalkerWolf please share anything you remember. Good question as to why it was demolished, it seems very odd to me. We had a Victorian Castle demolished in Bolivar, WV similar to this one because it was the 1950's and people didn't consider Victorian to be historic at that time, even the NPS. The reasons they gave that it was 'in dis-repair, and too costly to sell or maintain'. However a Victorian Castle does still survive in Berkeley Springs, WV.

The Marlborough men were granted permission from the War Department to take the bell. If they hadn't most likely the bell would have been melted to be used for ammunition during the Civil War and today we would have no bell. The Bell belongs in Marlborough.
