How did you make the forge welds stick? I have been trying my darndest to make an axe with a method similar to this, yet no matter what the forgewelds always seem to fail even when I get the steel far hotter than is shown here. Am I missing something?
@AxlPBlacksmith
@AxlPBlacksmith 7 күн бұрын
Make sure the surfaces of where the weld is gonna be are clean, prevent having any scale on those. Don't forget to use a flux, most people use borax, you can also use sand but that has a lower melting point.
@leetheeagle7264
@leetheeagle7264 7 күн бұрын
@@AxlPBlacksmith I see. What kind of cleaning should I give that surface and should I apply the borax immediately after it?
@AxlPBlacksmith
@AxlPBlacksmith 7 күн бұрын
@@leetheeagle7264 Just grind it smooth and make sure that most of the scale is off, the grit doesnt really matter. Apply borax when the steel is at a red-orange color, wear a mask tho since its nasty stuff( ive gotten really sick from it). When the steel is at like an orange - yellow color, hit the metal a few times to set the weld, then do the actual forgeweld.

Nice job. I just recently did my first compound grind on a straight razor. It was educational. lol. Did you taper the tail of the blade much? I haven’t gotten to the handle yet on mine.
@AxlPBlacksmith
@AxlPBlacksmith 9 күн бұрын
The tail on this razor tapers down to 2mm, so half of the thickness of the spine of the blade itself. Don't forget the handle has like a small wedge at the end so the scales are kinda bent and under tension.

@@AxlPBlacksmith thank you for the answer and tip. I have been a little apprehensive to start the handle. Also a bit busy. But will get it eventually. lol.

That's shark for a knife but dull for a straight razor
@AxlPBlacksmith
@AxlPBlacksmith 18 күн бұрын
Tell me how you know its dull since it shaved pretty well last time i used it.

As someone who hones straight razors and has forged a couple, he is correct. The edge on a straight razor is so fine cutting paper like you did would destroy the edge. There is a big difference between "razor" sharp for knives and actual razor sharp. You should be tree topping arm hairs, not cutting paper.
@AxlPBlacksmith
@AxlPBlacksmith 17 күн бұрын
@@shawnfeile Cutting paper is not that good for the edge, sure. But it does not destroy it. The ideal test to see if its sharp is to actually shave with it.

BIGTIME shortcut from someone who does razors for a living. Cut your blanks in a diagonal line. The resulting taper if WAY faster to forge into a tail/handle.

great work, you should get a large magnet and put it on the bottom of the horn of ur anvil, it reduces ringing alot. Could use a welding magnet, I use just a large one from an old large Speaker
