Thank you for the excellent coaching and explanation. I had just tied my laser on its maiden voyage with a half wrap a bit loose and was derigging and suddenly I was floating away. Now using full wraps from now on, thanks to you

My dad always taught us the full wrap --- half wrap had a big red X on it in our book of knots. Multi wrap was specifically described for use by thin or "synthetic slick" line in that book.

Excellent lesson for all boaters. Being from the UK, I tend to use the full wrap with the locking turn after a full 'X'.

I started doing a cleat hitch on a RYA sailing course and was told just to OXO it. Seems like OXO is preferred in most cases.

What do you recommend if the line is too big (slightly) for the cleat?

Best I’ve seen. Watched a lot of videos that all seem to say the first method is good for everything. Obviously knot…

So.....Wrap the base of the cleat, thats where the friction is. More wraps, more security, especially with small line on a larger cleat. Minimum half, full for overnight, but two loops around the base is best. The figure-8 is just to finish it off. Wrap twice, twist a loop and lock it. Dress the end.

Great lesson. It's nice that you showed it is the wraps that hold, not the figure 8 around the horns.

Well the one problem with full cleat hitch is if you start it from the normal side (like in the video and as I understand the only proper side) than you finish it in the “wrong” way away from yourself so you have to sit down and pull it against your foot to finish it off 😢😢😢
@Bakanelli
@Bakanelli 8 ай бұрын
I figured it out that after the full wrap is made that you can go around one additional horn so that way you change the direction of the pull to yourself 🤪

In addition to drying away from sunlight and UV rays, you should also mention to not use your regular thin hanger for hanging it up. You should get a wetsuit specific hanger that has broader shoulders and will prevent too much stretching, or drape it over something at the waist.

Very informative video. I now know ‘wetting out’ is the reason for feeling sticky inside my suit (preventing breathability) and how to re-waterproof properly.

Good afternoon and thank you for this informative video. I have a question about how these work. I have 2 - 17' x 4' metal frames with 8 solar panels each. The frames are set on poles so I can turn them from East to West all day every hour. As far as just keeping the wind from turning them I need to know if I used just 1 section of rope attached to each side of the frames would these cleats keep the rope held in place or is this a one direction type of thing? I would really appreciate an answer if you have the time. Thank you!

One of the few videos where the full/European cleat hitch is even acknowledged and even explain why/when you should use it as well as the even less discussed multi -pas- wrap

That second "full wrap" cleat hitch can lock up under high load where you "close the wrap" and make it a royal PIA to get it undone. Yes, it's more secure, yes it jams the line, no I won't ever use it on my boat.
@apsltd
@apsltd Жыл бұрын
I get your thinking, but…. Actually the loaded wrap gets pulled deeper and the second wrap stays more to the top on a traditional horn cleat such that the more load the less the two lines bind.

Can we see you secure a 4” poly hawser to an H bitt or 3” nylon dock line to a deck bollard? That should be interesting.

Sorry, but I prefer a wrap, a hitch and finish with several wraps around the base of the cleat. You can finish with a figure 8 if you like. Wrapping the cleat before you tie a hitch may not allow you to free the line after it has been stressed. Wrapping after to apply the hitches will secure the vessel and allow you to free the line when you’re ready to. They’re a back up.

I didn’t tie my boat to the dock correctly and it floated away when I went for the truck. I think I wound up on boneheaded boaters of the week.

Interesting! In 33 years of sailing from dingy to tallship, I han’t used any of those and I didn’t even realise there were more ways to do this, let alone being names for various knots! Mine doesn’t go round the base, it always is two figures of eight, clockwise on the top, and a half hitch on the third pass. It has never failed me. (Funny I had to recall on motor memory to write this down) 😅

Whoever cleated the last boat I took out needs to watch this. I will say that the knot held well, a bit difficult on the removal though.
