I've thought about why Ridgway cried when he was forgiven by that family member. The only thing I can come up with is that he was able to take the hate that was poured out on him because all he understood was rage and hate. He could work with that emotion. But he simply could not comprehend the notion that someone could forgive him for what he did. I don't think his tears were anything more than an outward expression of inner confusion. So in regards to Keyes the couple he murdered in Vermont was particularly brutal, his plan for the husband was he was going to rape, torture and kill him.
