When the trees shrink as time goes backwards... dunno, there’s just something poetic and thought provoking about it... one forgets the country landscape hasn’t always been the way it is now I guess... anyway gives me a weird primeval feeling! Love this show... 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Does anyone remember the theme song for the children's TV program 'Magpie' in the 1970s/early 1980s?

Great series. The mythological Green Man appears to permeate the lovely countryside on show during the series and the magpie features too.

What I like about Detectorists is there is no attempt to sneer & make fun of the rustic hobbyists. The unforced humour is in the simple things.

Bloody brilliant! I don’t know how many times I’ve rewatched this series, with the sad exception of the final special which didn’t even begin to capture the emotion of the original. For me it ended with the Magpie tree.

A town where a mosaic ( it could've been any other archaeology) dug up removed without being recorded, by the site director, who was hoping not to find anything... Ironic, but obviously accidental re script writers. Unless somebody involved does know about a similar incident and it is a sideways pop at a certain person in the place mentioned who thought/ hoped the dig was over , and didn't want to find anything else, especially if the something else had nothing to do with the era of the main dig. Something that was not only centuries later ( 1300s ad) than the initial dig ,something that couldn't be started, recorded and finished within an extra couple of days. Or even weeks. So it was quickly covered until everyone had finished, except one person ( who ive known since i first volunteered, a couple of years before i had graduated.) And we both watched as he fired up the JCB and proceeded to scoop up as much as he possibly could in the remaining daylight that was left. Impossible that he removed everything.... But anyway for my eternal shame, i kept my mouth shut, 1st because the guy is very well known in his area, and respected by some, but ( as i later found out) considered dubious by others . But at the time i only knew about the positive, that he'd discovered a lot of good things that re wrote history, re the importance of the area , that he'd had books published, and made several appearances on tv . So i said nothing, fearing he had enough power to end my career before it had even started . After i graduated and accepted a full time job, i soon found out he had no power beyond accepting or not applicant's applying for jobs on his own digs . But i didn't know all thst , if i had i would've taken a bunch of photos from all angles, and made sure some included enough of the background to prove where they had come from. Then told my district boss , and my lecturer, who was and is very well known, etc etc.. Until someone took notice and did something about it. The tv series is just that a tv series, if i had taken those photos the bloke in charge wouldn't have been able to delete them because he wouldn't have known my screen code . Sadly things like the mosaic being removed, especially on sites where developers are paying the wages , does happen. .but ive also worked on digs with developers who have been fantastic, and have given us more time , even when we've already gone beyond the time thought to be plenty. But , there always good and bad, where money and bonuses are involved generally more bad and uninterested in the relevance , importance, or anything like that. Thankfully that was my one and only personal experience Of anything like that.

This is up there as one of the finest moments in British Television History. The only sitcom with a more poignant moment that springs to mind is the end to Blackadder 4.

Can anyone shed more light on this scene? The popular interpretation seems to be that the girl has died and this is her funeral. But the grave doesnt seem big enough to me, there's no grave marker, and why would you bury a huge pot of coins like that with a young girl? Unless it's accompanying a dead king or chieftain, coin hoards are usually buried secretly, in an age before banks, to safeguard your wealth in the face of impending danger, such as an invading army. The intention was always to return and recover the coins once it was safe to do so, but for some reason or another (usually death) the owners were unable to return. But why the holy man? That seems to add weight to the funeral theory. But I'm not sure. Did Mackenzie Crook ever offer an explanation? What's your interpretation?

The girl had died and her parents were worried they had offended the gods... their crops had maybe failed aswell. They offered gold and silver coins to appease the gods. The holy man is there to cast prayers for a better crop next season... or even worse heaven forbid .. their crops had failed and they offered their daughter as a sacrifice to appease the pagan gods.
