Neil has a total of five 1st author papers -- all written during the 80s and 90s. The years when Harvard turned him down for post grad. The years when University of Texas dissolved his doctoral committee -- essentially flunking him. His U.T. doctoral committee correctly informed him he had no aptitude for astrophysics. After receiving a degree from Columbia he abandoned research altogether for a career in show business. His flashy pop science is riddled with error.

Neil loves to talk about himself. If he had an actual interest in the universe he'd take the time to get his equations right.

She is saying "ideology", and I wonder if she means "ideation". I agree that this impulse is a mystery. I think there are cases, albeit atypical, that don't appear to be preceded by depression.

The one thing everyone who has committed suicide has in common is their thoughts are a mess...managing your thoughts can help...

Unfortunately, Judy probably doesn’t realize that she was part of that cultural shift that took place in the late 60’s that replaced the previous Biblically oriented perspective on life and societal mores with a celebration of the empty Self that has seen such a dramatic increase in the per capita incidents of teen suicides since then. Life has to have intrinsic meaning way beyond what we can artificially induce through sex, drugs, and rock and roll and the celebration of the Self. I,too, had that background noise of what she calls “the suicide ideology” back then until the day I discovered real Faith in Christ and discovered what my heart always sort of suspected was really there but didn’t know how to access it.

An important out-take! It was an awesome podcast too, as are your others with Kasia! Can your put the full episodes on KZfaq please? More people will then be able to watch them and the auto-transcribe feature will be useful.

Hello, Mr. Singer. Recently, I became very interested in philosophy, and I became very interested in you. I want to become a great philosopher like you! I am contacting you because I am learning about your theory of civil disobedience at school. I wonder if you think civil disobedience from interest groups can also be justified based on shared views of justice. As far as I know, the professor claims civil disobedience based on utilitarianism, but do you think civil disobedience can be done if there is a great benefit to the shared view of justice itself? I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks Peter. If you strip out from this conversation all Mark and Jason's pro-animal agriculture arguments (whether "factory" farming or not) that would also support farming human infants 👶 or dogs 🐶 for food 🥩... there's basically nothing left.

Why is the idea of sharing (a monetary representation of) natural wealth kept out of the public discourse? I've tried to change that, but it's the kind of thing that requires a community of interested people to have a proper discussion. (Google doesn't even list my blog in search results.) If we account for economic externalities by charging fees to industry proportional to resources extracted, pollution emitted or wildlife habitat destroyed, we will make better decisions about what to buy, because those things that cause harm to the environment will have higher prices. An honest market will promote sustainability. Sharing proceeds from fees to all people would make the policy fair, and would end abject poverty. (This should be a global policy, because we have a global market and a global society.) We could reduce harm to the environment. If random polls show that most people think that this or that kind of impact on the environment is being carried to excess, the associated fee can be raised. We can apply the idea to limiting or preventing *actual* harm, too. If most people think that the number of animals held captive in pursuit of profit, or the severity of their confinement conditions, is excessive, we could charge fees to those who are involved in the animal exploitation industry. They'd have an incentive to reduce both the numbers of animals held AND the amount of suffering inflicted on each one.

It's difficult to overstate Peter Singer's influence on the world, from the animal rights movement to the effective altruism movement. We hope more and more people will read his groundbreaking work - from "Famine, Affluence, and Morality" to "Animal Liberation Now."

Very few philosophers are useful. Peter Singer is an outstanding exception: Singer’s arguments have convinced many thousands of people to commit their lives to do the most good possible. Even if I disagree with him about some things, I can’t dispute that he’s done more good with his life than I can probably do with mine.

My life is different, is better, because I took an English class (Critical Reading and Writing) wherein the professor chose for study 'Animal Liberation'. I hope to see moral philosophers, and others, call for an honest economic system, and for equal sharing of natural wealth. A fee charged to industries proportional to extraction of natural resources, emission of pollutants and destruction of wildlife habitat would cause profit to align with sustainability. Sharing proceeds from fees would end poverty. Random polls can reveal when environmental impact fees are high enough (when impacts of various kinds are low enough). We can imagine (and create) a survey process that allows poll respondents time to ponder questions, to research and discover what trusted experts say on the topic under consideration, and that invite dialogue among citizens who are considering similar questions. A process that encourages reflection and dialogue will likely produce better results when deciding appropriate limits to various kinds of impact on the environment.
