Hi San Antonian here! I'm happy you liked Wonderland! What you said about the mall feeling more like a "community" honestly rings true. As a frequent visitor of the mall, I feel like this is something natural to San Antonio, since a lot of our recreational spaces were either once places that struggled financially, or were abandoned but refurbished and now have new life brought back into them. Also yeah, North Star is infamous for being packed, lol.

as someone who worked at rivercenter the only thing keeping that mall alive is tourists and the riverwalk la cantera and north star out compete all other malls around here

I live about 5 minutes away and never realized it was a mall until I went in through what I thought was the exit of AR’s entertainment (dave and busters type place) saw a couple homeless people having a snooze.

I also go to school about a mile away from River center, walked there almost everyday after school freshman year, stopped by whataburger to see my friend who worked there, go up to the roof and look at the view and talk with friends. River center is a great mall.

curious to see how the mall turns out in a few years. I went a couple months ago while there was a large flea market day going on and theyve seemingly have started some big renovations

This brings back memories. This mall was one my favorite spots to hang out at when I used to live in San Antonio. It's a shame you didn't get to try Goomba's pizza, tho. It was actually one of my favorite places in the entire city to get a slice from. I also highly recommend Chicago's on Blanco Road. That's a few miles east off of I-410.

I’ve lived two towns over since 1971 and all of our malls are basically the same as Daytona now. And that Germans beer place, in the 70’s and 80’s we used to get beer cans there when beer can collecting was big. That and Florida festival was another short lived tourist trap we got beer cans at.

Local here, that corridor in your My Concerns section does get used during some of the mini conventions the mall hosts on the weekends. Why it's open outside of those times is beyond me though.

The Volusia mall has a ton of childhood memories for me and its depressing to even go in now. I do a lap about once a year for the nostalgia. Stores like Good Vibrations (Surf Shop), Father and Sons (Mens shoe store that was one of the only places to get Dr Martens in the 90s), Electronics Boutique and the once present Arcade were great among others. They also had one of the old school Sbarros that had brass railings everywhere. I think at one point someone poured soap in the fountain and it was shutdown after that. I was one of the original crew that opened the Guitar Center in One Daytona and can tell you it was a bad decision to go with that location. That plaza was extremely mismanaged and they would micro manage every tiny thing we did and would never do anything to help. On top of that, any "events" that went on only hurt the business as the locals dont go anywhere near there if there is a race happening. I dont know who that plaza caters to as I dont know anyone who would shop for furniture or the other random stores there. I would venture to say that besides the restaurants Bass Pro Shop and Guitar Center are the only draws there now that the theater traffic isn't what it used to be.

Northpark is immaculate compared to this, something closer to a mall you would see in Nashville Tennessee. To me wonderland of t he Americas is a place I go to see trading cards every once in a while. Goomba's is awesome it used to have it's own location outside of the mall but that was closed down. The shops at la cantera are definitely worth checking out its like an outdoor mall, really cool.

I love Wonderland! I work between 410 and 1604 and usually take 410 home -- and Wonderland is on my way home, so I end up stopping by on days that I get off early sometimes. I actually prefer to eat at Rico's, they're pretty tasty. Elevators are also usually only shut off for events! it helps control crowds a bit, especially for some of the larger ones.

I love that you covered this mall! I have a lot of good memories going there as a kid. The Palm Pavillion used to have a smoothie place under the escalators that had the best smoothies I ever had in my life. Better than smoothie king. I agree that Wonderland is very smartly managed - the medical and immigration offices have a great location there. And part of the mall used to be a nursing school before the school was shut down a few years back due to fraud! I think it was Kaplan but I could be wrong.

Lived in San Antonio for a good bit of my life so this was interesting to see. As other comments have pointed out, this is still in San Antonio and this was a good looking at Wonderland. Most of the time the malls I choose to go to are La Cantera, Northstar or River Center for reasons you basically covered. I think I've only ever been to Wonderland once in my entire time in San Antonio and it was solely for the video game store they have. One interesting note is that just this past May they actually held a little Star Wars convention with some of the background actors from the original three films which was pretty cool

Most of the little shops were over taken by other companies, there was a comic book store and a "old school horror" store i love going too, but now they're replaced with another funkle pop store. I definitely miss the comic store, it's been a bit since i was there, but it's my cousins favorite place to find cosplay items. I remember seeing a huge Pikachu suit in one of the little shops lol! There's some hallways that feel so.. Liminal. Also the "FlashBack" video game store use to been called "Ramsey's island" it used to been better since they sold older figures and plushes, but sadly it's all now replaced with funkle pops again :( If anyone wants to go, on Sundays at September is SanJapan which is sort of a "Anime convention" it was very fun going there! Got a very cool Kimono and key chains! The Mall also holds a lot of DnD and WarHammer conventions next to the food court! The place is constantly changing, so all the stuff he show, might not be there any more

I went to the mall in 2019 when I went to Gen Con. There also was a Johnny Rockets at the food court. It was sort of dead back then and it looks deader now. I used it as a shortcut to get to other places. The mall gave me a weird vibe went I went there.

Baldwin Park was built on the land reclaimed from a huge Navy base that was there from the late 1960's to 1990's. It was where I went to boot camp. Before that it was an Air Force base.

I'm glad you mentioned the community events, you're completely right that it's just as much of a community center as it is a mall. I've lived in San Antonio all my life, and as a kid we used to go here all the time for the slot car racing (and they used to have more tracks). Those gigantic empty spaces are FULL of vendors whenever they have one of their cons, and this mall can get really really packed during the events. It did recently lose one of their bigger events and the arthouse theater that was here closed during the pandemic (the mall's biggest loss imo), so I am still a little worried about it but the community events are definitely what's keeping it alive.

You could've visited the Live Oak mall and seen a mall in its death throes. Smells like damp carpet throughout the whole mall and only one escalator ever works.
