Hi MDOT, I have one quick question that is not completely related to this video, but may still be somewhat relevant. This is regarding mileage markers. The non-freeway stretches of US-31, US-131, and US-127 in particular could have mile posts similar to those along US-2 and M-28 in the Upper Peninsula, since these three roads extend all the way down to the Indiana or Ohio borders. These could be fully marked from start to finish including the non-freeway portions. I can understand why mile markers would be impractical along the non-freeway stretch of US-23 from Mackinaw City to Standish, for example, because drivers getting to Ohio from the north are near certain to take I-75 anyway. The same goes for all of US-12 because people will use I-94 to get to Indiana. However, US-31, US-131, and US-127 could be a different story. Mileage markers could be more practical for these portions of highways: ▪US-31 from Holland to Grand Haven ▪US-31 from Ludington to I-75 (near Mackinaw City) ▪US-131 from the Indiana border to Schoolcraft ▪US-131 from Manton to Petoskey ▪US-127 from the Ohio border to Jackson ▪US-127 from St. Johns to Ithaca Is there any particular reason why these stretches of road are not marked with mileage markers at all yet US-2 and M-28 are? Thank you for taking the time to read my question and respond.

Hi there! Those mile markers on M-28 and US-2 are part of a successful pilot project to see how installing such markers would benefit drivers and first responders. Subsequent to the installations, the locations of the markers were geolocated using Global Positioning System (GPS) survey equipment, from which a Geographic Information System (GIS) layer was generated. This GIS layer was provided to all emergency dispatch centers in the Upper Peninsula and was easily integrated into their existing Computer Aided Dispatch systems. The layer is now routinely used to quickly locate motorists experiencing emergency situations on these routes based only on the motorists' reports of the adjacent mile marker. This has been a highly successful safety improvement. It allows for shorter response times to areas that are remote from hospitals and could save a life during events of severe winter storm conditions. Now it's just a matter of programming available funds to install similar mile markers on other highways.

so you just look at belts and pullies and I bet you charge more than $100.00 for that service, you dont check the sludge box or bull gear, the two main components of the diesel engine. if you can get away with charging money for what you do then by all means do it.

Does that mean you are going to fix the roads, all I see around Michigan is cold patch and it won't stay in because they don't fix the roads properly

Hi there! We've certainly got plenty of full rebuilds and resurfacing projects happening across the state. You can see current and upcoming state road and bridge projects (I, M and US routes) at www.Michigan.gov/Drive, state road and bridge projects set for the next five years at www.Michigan.gov/MDOT5YearPlan, and state road and bridge projects made possible by Gov. Whitmer's Rebuilding Michigan program providing an additional $3.5 billion over five years to rebuild the state roads and bridges that carry the most traffic and are critical to the state's economy at www.Michigan.gov/RebuildingMichigan. Thanks for following MDOT!

Alternative #2 is the worst idea possible. That is such a heavily travelled corrider, 1 lane in each direction?! lmfao wow. And with ALT #3, acting like bike lanes couldnt fit on that with parking is crazy. Go with alt#3 with bike lane modifications.

Anything but rail, I guess. No one's heard of the downs-thompson paradox in the USA it would seem. Detroit international CSA is too large to not have mass transit, it's the same population as atlanta. The only reason I can imagine for putting in so many sensors instead of building rail or a dedicated bus lane is just to keep tabs on everyone. How is this more efficient than investing in the MDOT line from Indiana to Detroit, or building a bus lane? There is a 0% chance this will be built for 130 million, this will likely cost more than the 275/75 project. We're getting the R&D field test not the finished product. I really like whitmer, but this was imo her biggest miss. Because Whitmer made the deal, I believe she tried to balance the interests of multiple parties and had to come to something less than ideal so I can only be so upset with the signatory.

Sorry to hear you feel that way. Flex Routes help address directional congestion (one way in the morning, the other way in the evening) at a fraction of the cost that would be incurred if completely new lanes were built.

Great job on efficient use of resources. I suspect that the Ford Model T does a better job than some expensive machinery that uses lasers to do conture/surface mapping. Having a Model T in the stable not only makes best practices and economic sense, it can't hurt from a public relations standpoint. Congratulations all around.

Is there not a concern that the wider shoulder will encourage drivers of modern vehicles to travel at even higher speeds? I am concerned that interventions such as the one mentioned in the video will actually decrease safety overall. Turn those roads into more narrow gravel roads without lane markings and modern cars will slow down enough to safely navigate around the horse drawn carriages.

My tax dollars are being used to fund this BS? How about we require all users of a road to carry insurance and register their vehicles (bicycles too), then we require MSP to do their jobs and enforce the traffic laws! At that point, we could have the folks at MDOT actually fix the roads instead of wasting time studying a “problem” that only exists for a small subset of road users.

Horse drawn vehicles always had a locally standardised width between the wheels, right in history back for hundreds of years. If the wheels on your cart were wider or narrower than the standard then they wouldn’t roll in the bottom of the ruts but would quickly break by being constantly splayed out or pinched in. Tarmac roads ended the problem.
