A lot of reactions here fail to recognize that splitting NOVA off into its own state would hugely benefit the Ds that live there. Like most blue urban areas in geographically red states, people in NOVA are subsidizing the rest of the state with their tax dollars; the ratio of state funds spent in NOVA to state funds gained via taxation from NOVA is the worst in the state. And while the state legislature is currently divided roughly equally between Rs and Ds, a NOVA splitoff would be dominated by Ds, meaning reforms in areas Ds care about - housing, gun control, education, etc. - would be significantly easier to achieve. Seriously, if you're a fedgov employee living in Arlington, what do you gain personally and politically from sharing a state with Lee County?

This senecio hinges on the idea that just because France still has a substantial colony in the new world. That just means that all liberal Frenchmen just move there instead of staying in France. Not all people would end up leaving France. And the overall conditions of the peasants wasn’t getting any better so no matter what the revolution was still likely going to happen.
