My mother had post partum depression after the birth of my baby sister. I was 4 years old, my sister only a few weeks old, when we were placed in an orphanage. My mother was given a lobotomy and was reduced to the functional age of a 5 year old. I had been my sister’s caretaker, but we were separated to different units in the orphanage. I was allowed to see her on the day we entered. I was shown which bassinet she was in. I also was taken to see her through a gate, the day she took her first steps. From there, we were placed in a series of 6 foster home placements. I was 4 and my sister 2 years old. We were starved, frequently beaten with belts or switches. We were forced to take long naps every afternoon. Out for supper, bathed and back to bed. Often we were accused of “something “ , which resulted in no dinner, beaten and back to bed. The physical and mental abuse was horrific. There is so much more, abusive husbands etc. Needless to say, I have deep parental wounds and attachment issues. Thank you for shining a light on the consequences of lack of a nurturing care provider.

We start to become investigators, damn good ones too. Documenting everything. We never knew we would become psychologist in the mean time. Lol Although completely toxic, through my discovery I found my true self, reflecting where I was in my beliefs, fears and past trauma. My entanglement with the NPD set me on the journey to my purpose. Now certified advocate i am able to educate others. Grateful!

Gaslighting makes you feel crazy. Not just because of the apparent lying, but the fact that we thought our partner was mentally intact, come to find they dont grasp morality, decency, common sense and unaware of hypocritical double standards. The fact that the partner would rather appear immoral and hypocritical then choosing to either be honest or stop behaving in ways that pushes them to lie. I finally grasped that this is insanity. Lying is also false portrayal of self. Then the individual has no moral ground to stand upon, they become hypocrites, almost delusional in appearanceYou start thinking about the moments you were intimate, and how now knowing what you know that attaches to the false intimate connection

Porn addiction is also a sex addiction. Not all sex addicts use prostitutes so not all sex addicts can afford a therapist. Yea there are people who genuinely can’t afford therapy.

Thanks for the heads-up but knowing this is ultimately pointless. You can not change your past or who you are by talking about it. We are doomed by our parents to live out the fates they have provided for us in their lack of wisdom and personal sense of care. You can escape yourself, but not your stars.

Dear Alex, you didn't really comment on treating those that have 3rd trimester trauma and dissociation. What do you think of Primal Therapy in this respect, where Arthur Janov says people relive this period of their lives on a body level. Or LSD Psychotherapy, where people seem to actually relive pre-hippocampal memories and release the repression and reconnect the brain? This seems to be well-documented in the more than 10,000 papers on the use of psychedelics in psychotherapy. The actual reliving of the birth trauma and even pre-natal traumas on a visceral, body level. So rather than asking one's mother, actually accessing the memories on a sensory, body level. Your thoughts would be welcomed.

There are many wonderful modalities available to us for healing today so we all have to do our due diligence to find out what's best for us. Trust your intuition while in consultation with a professional therapist who can both guide and challenge you so that you can come to a clear answer for yourself. Good luck on your journey!

I feel perhaps that there is one missing piece here. At 6:40 you discuss that a person seeks out being treated badly because they are re-running the patterns in the brain. I agree with this but I would like to take it a step further. Robert Firestone talks about the false self, which is a self-hating self that keeps the true self suppressed because the true self is full of shame and pain. By receiving real love it threatens the false self because the false self must remain hating of the real self. So when someone is nice to us or loves us this self-hating primary defense is threatened. It must remain in tact or the primary pain underneath may surface. Low self-esteem is actually a primary defense against infantile pain. This of course goes back to the infants survival mechanism where it cannot accept that mom is bad or doesn't love it so it must blame the self. So all of this threatens the primary defense against being unloved as an infant and small child. This is too painful. So by accepting someone nice and loving, we are threatening our self hate mechanism, which is a primary defense against infantile pain. We reject being treated too well because it touches on our real self, that is full of pain.

My girlfriend of 10 years who hasn't betrayed me for 2 years now has set some boundaries for me. I'm 53 and have never been to a brothel, she wants me to start going as long as she can watch. And she's reclaiming sex with me, she's willing to endure sex as long as we watch porn at the same time and as long as I do not touch her nor look at her and I have to role play that I don't exist. Well, it's a start!

I was married to my very accepting wife for 51 years and I cared for her with MS for 26 years. She is no longer with us. I haven't had sex with anyone for 25 years. I'm too old now but it sure is good to FINALLY be free to be who I am. I am definitely noticing many very hot guys. I was a Baptist Pastor and missionary but I've been told I am not welcome even attend church and that I never was.

Pornography destroys relationships. It cripples you. Scientific studies show MAJOR negative affects of your brain on porn. I was addicted for over 20 years. Accountability has helped me. Also, changing bad behaviors to new good behaviors. Porn causes ED. I also want to add - Jesus broke those chains of addiction for me. I'm currently using Covenant eyes as my iPhone browser.

Yes I understand what withdrawal is from love addiction it is pure h*** it is absolutely h*** and I can understand that I've been through this more than once and I'm so thankful to God that I'm not in it anymore but to me I believe recovery is a lifetime process and with my Lord my savior he will help me along the way and we always have to watch over ourselves and pray I'm thankful because he changed my life and I'm not doing the things I used to do and if I see myself getting into something or a familiar qualifier somebody I don't know I recognize right on the button what they're about and I avoid them because I know how easy I can get sucked into this and that's happened to me in the past but no more I'm getting better every day

Whilst alcohol can kill you directly, sex addiction can lead to outcomes which makes you so hopeless that you will end your own life. Just like they may with any addiction. The fact that these fellowships alone communicates the necessity for them.

Ya, after about 2 days it’s hard to wack off because the walls are cracking and I hear imaginary voices. Then I force myself to eat nibbles of food as if I eat at a normal speed I’ll vomit. The escape is fun for a bit, it takes me about a week and half to get back a completely normal state

Why do you think sex addicts keep going to one or select few affair partner(s)? Is it some kind of somatic resonance? I'm told by the sex addict that it was bec it was easy but then again, they truly don't remember the incidents or the feelings associated during those moments. I don't understand that and trying to figure it out to understand better. I think a sex addict would have A LOT of partners but this dx'd sex addict did not have but only 3 that cycled through for 30+ years of the sa's various marriages.

Every person who struggles with sex addiction does so in their own unique way which typically reflects their early parental wounds. It's a "no win" situation to try and figure out why people do what they do, that's for each person to figure out in their own therapy. Understanding your partner can have you having more compassion for him but it's his responsibility to explain his motivations to you once he has spent enough time in therapy and in program answering those questions for himself. In the meantime, I hope you find the support you need to help you heal.
