The date on the title is wrong. It could NOT have been June 2nd, 1978, because Tom seaver pitched his no-hitter on June 16th, 1978.

Reds uniforms are the best!! This is back in the days, when guys were EXPECTED to play, hustle & perform....no baby prina Donna's, no dress fashion with necklaces, rings, batting gloves.and their was a uniform code w stirrups & sanitary sox and black shoes and batters actually knew how to bunt! The game then vs the "show" we are seeing today is just no comparison. It's a shame...no wonder it's no longer "America's Favorite Pastime".

Time of this game: 2 hours, 51 minutes. With this win, Cincinnati's record was 66-52; the Cubs, 56-66. Remember, too, that this was Game 1 of a Reds vs. Cubs doiubleheader. Game 2 was also quite a humdinger. The starting pitchers for Game 2 were Joey Jay for the Reds and Cal Koonce for the Cubs. All of the starting position players for Game 1 started Game 2, as well. The Reds got to Koonce for a run in the top of the 5th, when Deron Johnson led off with a double to center-field and scored on a double to right-field by the very next batter, Johnny Edwards. SCORE: Reds 1, Cubs 0. The Reds scored three more runs off of Koonce and reliever Billy Hoeft in the top of the 6th. Pete Rose led off with an infield single, advanced to 2nd base on a groundout by Vada Pinson, and scored on a double to center-field by Frank Robinson. Exit Koonce, enter Hoeft, who struck out Tony Perez (pinch-hitting for Gordy Coleman; Perez stayed in the game at first base), then intentionally walked Deron Johnson. Up came Johnny Edwards, who lined a double to right-field, scoring both Robinson and Johnson. SCORE: Reds 4, Cubs 0. Fear not, Cubs fans! After the Cubs made a couple of substitutions in the infield in the top of the 8th inning (Joe Amalfitano for Glenn Beckert at 2nd base and Jimmy Stewart for Don Kessinger at shortstop), the Cubs got to Jay in the bottom of the 8th inning. Don Landrum led off with a single to center-field. Doug Clemens followed with another single to center-field, Landrum advancing to 3rd base. Up came Billy Williams, who lined a 3-run home run into the right-field bleachers. SCORE: Reds 4, Cubs 3. After Cubs relief pitcher Lindy McDaniel set the Reds down 1-2-3 in the top of the 9th inning (fly-out to right by Tommy Harper, fly-out to left by Pete Rose, strikeout by Vada Pinson), up came the Cubs in the bottom of the 9th. Jimmy Stewart led off with a fly-out to center. Up came Harvey Kuenn, batting for McDaniel - and he grounded a single to left-field. Ellis Burton was brought in to run for Kuenn. Jay then struck out Joe Amalfitano. Exit Jay, enter relief pitcher Bill McCool to pitch to Don Landrum. Burton stole second base - and then Landrum hit a 2-run home run into the left-field bleachers. FINAL SCORE: Cubs 5, Reds 4. (One can only imagine the TV call of the last two innings by Jack Brickhouse and Lloyd Pettit.) Time of Game 2: 2 hours, 38 minutes. I'd say that the 11,342 fans who attended this doubleheader at Wrigley Field on 19 August 1965 got their money's worth - wouldn't you?

What a roller coaster game. I’m a Mets fan who saw this game on tv when it happened and so hearing the Reds version of the broadcast makes it feel new. Crazy game

I also watched it from New York, as a Mets fan. I am pleasantly surprised at how even-handed these Reds announcers are.

John Franco, whom I liked, is actually being a bit of a pr***k over Dave Parker's error. And Pete Rose, whom I've always disliked (back to the Buddy Harrelson fight - I'm a Mets fan), is nothing but class, really, at least in this case.

Waite was the Reds' announcer when I was a kid, and we all rooted for rain delays, because Waite will tell his stories. Wonderful storyteller and as a Hall of Fame, he had plenty of stories to tell.

its kind of crazy, I was born decades after this or atleast a decade and a half. i'd see Jerry Stiller watching Seinfeld with my dad as a kid but never knew him by name. my introduction to the Stiller's was through Ben's movies first Night at the Museum being a kid as the first one came out, then later finding his movies like Meet the Fockers and Zoolander. So its pretty crazy seeing this video from what I assume is sometime during the 1970s mention Barbra Walters when many of the biggest interviews from the time i was in high school were done by Barbra Walters.. What a long and significant career.

Loved Waite Hoyt and he was at his best during rain delays. The stories he could tell as a HOF player on the 1920's Yankees and elsewhere were pure gold. We actually rooted for rain delays so we could hear his tales.

Ironic that this includes a commercial for when the giant pandas came to the Cincinnati Zoo, on loan from the Smithsonian National Zoo. True story: I recently visited the National Zoo in Washington, DC for the first time. I got there "between pandas." The National Zoo had just returned its giant pandas to China. Then, after my visit, the zoo announced that a NEW pair of giant pandas were being loaned to the National Zoo from China. When I told my brother that I had missed seeing the giant pandas at the National Zoo, he said, "Don't you remember? We saw them years ago when they came to the Cincinnati Zoo."

What I miss are the occasional updates announcers gave on action around the majors. So-and-so homered in another game. Now they run a bunch of scores across the screen.

Can’t express how big this game was for Reds’ fans. For three seasons, 1982, 83 and 84, it was awful. Pete came back, and they started winning again…. It was an amazing transformation. I believe in that final month of September of 84, the Reds went 16 - 12…. And in 1985, they won 89 games, were in contention most of the season, which was an incredible turnaround.
