Examples of music that is as good as the music that was made in the 1970's and the 1980's in all genres and even in the 1990's in rock and metal? Because all I read is about roasting Rick but I can't find any tangible evidence that music is just as good today and has lasting power. And when I say music I mean stuff that has commercial appeal, not artists that nobody has ever heard of and they play at your local bar. I'm curious.

I have to say this, because people clearly have the wrong impression and understanding about Beato and his issue with modern music. Pretty much everyone who complained about his recent vid seem to have only focused on his take on how everything is quantized and machine-like, which is really not his point at all. His point is not that everything is in perfect beats and pitch, it's that the human element is minimized. The ultimate point that he tries to make, is that when bands and artists record and make music today, they're focusing on and even driven by factors that should not matter, like perfect pitch, perfect tempo and beats, but most of all that the overall songs are sterile and easy. I.e. devoid of human feel, emotion and creativity, which are really what music is about! It's about HUMAN expression. He does NOT mean modern music can't be great, he just means that by and large music today is made with little human qualities, with lots of calculation, which leads to very boring and very hollow tracks. 'Everyone' sounds (by their soundscape) very similar and their songs follow very similar and simple patterns and trends. Because it's safe and it sells. But it doesn't stand out as personal and it doesn't express artistry. Just that someone wants to be a star and that someone else wants to make money. It's a bit soulless. It very much used to be that the most skilled and creative artists sold the most records and had the biggest fanbase. And please try to understand where Beato comes from. He's a very educated musician with a very long experience in the industry and some of the most greatest artists of his prime (80's and 90's). I don't think anyone can argue that 80's and 90's music was the likely the most diverse and creative time in recent history of popular music. His angle has always been about the creative art of music, which is human at its very core. You start taking that away, and you're left more and more with bland and 'machine-like' music (meaning something that doesn't have inherent bad qualities in anything). Yeah, he's older. But if you're honestly going to go by the 'ok boomer' route with Beato, then you're saying that to the man in this video too. Come on! Great, you've made it this far so let me tell you about myself and my take on Beato: I'm not subbed to his channel. I don't follow him and I don't agree with everything he says. I often dissagree and do find his approach of intentionally making controversy a bit disheartening. I very much like his vids where he analyzes songs and has talks with artists etc. I do watch and listen to him from time to time, but I don't watch everything that he makes. I don't really care about the vids that are clearly aimed at grabbing views, but I sometimes do check them a bit, to see what he's on about. I'd much rather see him making only the kind of content he used to make a few years back. But, he's gotten popular, and he is a bit in his own echochamber. That said, in this recent vid, he is absolutely right for the overall point he's making. And I see ALOT of hyperbole and claims about him, that are just not true.

I got the impression from Rick's video that he was pretty much talking about POPULAR music, i.e. the Spotify top 10 lists that he goes through periodically. I don't think he was trying to say that there is no new good music at all. I haven't listened to Fantano's response (yet) but I think Rick was correct in that the ease of creating and consuming music is a double edged sword. It's very similar to what ebooks are going through - it's easier than ever to self publish and there is good stuff available there....but the reader has to sort through a lot more mediocre material to find it.
@cleanandsoberstoner1
@cleanandsoberstoner1 11 күн бұрын
In context with his other material, I believe he is making a general statement. He doesn't say why some music is bad, he is saying why virtually all music is bad. That's my I take on it, but I seriously appreciate you putting that perspective in here. Keeps us all from going off the rails.
@mymusicmixminute

I agree with @torc7424, after all he (mostly, haven't seen otherwise) only reviews the Top 10 Spotify Pop. Haven't seen Rick review/rant about Top 10 blues, country, jazz, reggae, metal, etc. And he's totally into some new artists like Polyphia, Mateus Asato, and Tosin Abasi for instance. He interviews musicians, writers, producers, engineers, and sound guys from all across the creative/live/studio spectrum, with a slightly heavy bias towards older artists. That said, anyone who's got stories, experiences, and musical wisdom, probably has been around awhile. It seems, from your perspective, that he doesn't mention much metal, doom/gloom,, etc. and I would probably agree with you- I certainly haven't experienced it, if so. I've been a big reggae/dub fan for 50+ years but very rarely hear anything from him about it, other than the occasional Marley comment- I can find it elsewhere. Not going to hold it against him, if I could do it better, I would but I can't.🙂 Obviously, opinions can differ but the music "umbrella" is rather large and there's room for all that's gone by, is here now, and everything to come.

I commented this on Fantano's video but I'll type it here too. Beato complains so much if things are recorded "in the box." but also can't handle a mic'd snare that doesn't sound like Ringo's. His gatekeeping has probably always been bad but it's gotten so much worse.

@@cleanandsoberstoner1 Honestly, I don’t even think it’s gatekeeping so much as condescension. Up until 2 years ago he seemed fairly accepting, for his age. Once he started telling his personal stories from the industry, that’s when the condescension REALLY crept in. But you’re absolutely right. He needs to stop playing to the boomers, being Grampa Simpson and start embracing that things change. Rick isn’t helping shaming everyone into his taste. His talents are in music interviews…which getting those interviews could be in jeopardy once his Boomer/ Gen X fan/artist base dies off.

"HOPEFULLY NOT EXTINCT" (on where underground is going to be in 10 yrs)- man, that hits the spot!! Although there'll always hopefully be some kind of "weirdo" doing his / or her very own style of music, and recording stuff is easy - but: playing live has become DIFFICULT in some parts of the world. I can only imagine the US these days, here in South America I see it right now (some folks just gave up). Like I said, Europe is still a good place. But also more difficult than it was only few years ago .......

Nice one, watching right now. Let me add sth from the perspective of someone who's been in bands (and into this scene) for more than 20 yrs now, working with labels (even have my own), and is working on other parts of "the industry" (printed media in particular): IT IS COMPLEX - some bands don't even want commercial success - esp in "this scene"(as the best example: Kyuss split when they could have ruled the world LOL) ... so, there's many bands who just wanna hang out, have a few drinks, play a bit of heavy rawk, that's that ... then there's these who want success and have understood how to get there - yet: MANY others don't. First of all, you got it right: a lot depends on the band themselves - don't look for outside help so much (unto some degree: being on a label is not even necessary), although that special connection will always help! In many ways it's easy to start, it's very easy to record, to release by yourself, do it all ... YET: a lot of things have become more expensive (I'd say ten years ago was a better, or easier period for many things - the scene was IN BLOOM) ... on the other hand, the (mainstream) industry is kinda f***d up, or STUCK in a status quo from ca 30 yrs ago, where only very few examples even get any significant access (playtime on the radio? bigger coverage in magazines? - that's all connected to BIG marketing money) ... I could rave on for a while here ... I could imagine that even in Elder, or King Buffalo - not everyone in these bands can make a living from that kind of music. You have to play live a lot, in good places (E-U-R-O-P-E) and even there it became much more difficult. Talk about: I-N-F-L-A-T-I-O-N ... and rent prices that went up like CRAZY, insane, you know. Just few days ago I heard from a friend his studio rent went up to 2k EURO by month ... Let me conclude and continue watching: *In this scene, you gotta love what you do.* And when you love what you do, all else will not matter that much. Although, it can be tough! But that's life.

That dag danged YT keeps yakking up Beato videos into my feed and I have to constantly interrupt cooking or cleaning up to wipe it up and put in in the garbage like my cats' puke and hairballs and skip to the truly passionate music supporters like your channel and Sea of Tranquility. The problem is that Beato is spewing out content that will only serve himself. He offers expertise as a musician/producer/teacher/technician, but wastes it on focusing on chart topping pop, because his goal is getting his massive number of followers to become customers and buy his products. I can't say whether he does or doesn't care about new good music that's more underground, but he certainly doesn't care enough to support 'em. I understand he's given up his career as a producer to be a Tuber and needs to make money, but it's disingenuous to ignore the existence of literally mountains of great new music. So yeah, as I've said for the past few years, Beato is a blowhard and he can suckit.
