I can’t recommend Shadowdark enough. It was one of the most played TTRPG at Green Dragon Fest Convention. It is especially great for people that are new to the hobby.

Basic fantasy, 8$, 95% of everything to be found in OSR space.

It’s interesting there are so many different types and styles of RPGs - all bad clones of each other- it’s the group that makes the game fun- not the rules- most rule systems are just new accounting systems

You should educate yourself about the facts of the situation (he flagrantly violated all copyright law, and the specific agreement he signed to receive an early PHB). In NO WORLD are you allowed to show page by page of a book with a high res overhead camera-let alone an unpublished one!! That is INSANE. It could destroy the market for their product, which hundreds of people worked thousands of hours on. There is a culture among the TTRPG KZfaqr community of spreading misinformation about WotC for clicks and clout. In general, TTRPG KZfaqrs have proven themselves to be profoundly dishonest and immoral in spreading lies and spreading fear, anger and hate for profit (just like populist demagogues always have). You are early in your KZfaq journey. You have the opportunity to do the research and learn the (completely available) facts behind every "scandal" the KZfaq influencers fabricate and hype up. You can decide to stand up to liars and bullies. You can decide to do the right thing, even if it is unpopular and unprofitable. It's up to you.

Shadowdark is the most well-designed and well-organized RPG I have ever seen. It all fits neatly together. You don't need to flip through the book searching for rules. There is no bloat, and all of the rules are clear and simple.

Hasbro is an evil company. As much as I would love a sequel for BG3, I completely understand Larian moving on and wanting to do something that is their own original IP.

Regarding converting between systems (especially any or all that are the very basic "d20, roll high, level based, armor class/difficulty class, hit points" etc, not only is that kind of conversion pretty easy, but also, if you google it, alot of people have put "conversion guides" from one specific d20 system to another online. When converting between d20 and one of the other dice systems (roll under, percentile, or dice pool, etc) then you probably need to have a strong knowledge of both systems. But even then, if I ever run the Warhammer classic Enemy Within, it won't be with Warhammer. Any one of the many d20/DnD variants could work, with all the many published monsters, and so on. You are right, in any case: converting between systems is probably not an issue

So far, I haven't found a VTT that really works for me. Maybe something that has little to no actual imagery and a basic two color map and colored dots for enemies could work, but there's simply too much visual detail and automation to justify a game based in imagination, for me at least.

Having played 40k since 3rd ed, I'm glad to see more shifting from that to Agnostic games like OPR. Between rising costs, worse-than-ever-rule-creep and the constant need to keep up with a changing META, I think this was inevitable.

D&D is rather grim in most aspects. How most of us started it was bloody and dark. As editions go on, it's become very light hearted because times?

Foottraffic is the lifeblood of a store. If they have a physical location it will get you in to buy more products then what you went in for. As for just spending money. As a gamer I perfer physical, they cant stop supporting or edit my purchase after I purchase it. It also is tangible and lets me interact with it. As for preorders, most are not required to give you money should they not deliver. Especially direct to market from large corporations. So yes wait for reviews should thier be issues. Its a wise move. As for the new edition and WTOC im gonna so no thanks. I can get the older stuff amd retroclones all day every day. These past few months and year has shown how horrible WTOC and Hasbro are as a company and I honestly dont wanna give them money directly.

I think if they're gonna lean into the renaming of "races" to "species" they should go the full way and make half-elves and half-orcs sterile, in the same way that the hybrid offspring of two species are in real life (e.g., mules). I always kinda thought that it would be a good canon reason as to why there are only ever "half-elves" rather than quarter-elves, etc. I also think it would make half-races really quite sad, so don't know. Just thought it was an interesting caveat to the whole change to the terminology.

I think that, generally, when a company makes a big deal out of something like changing "race" to "species" it is a canary in the coal mine, so to speak. People who get super hung up on that in particular are missing the forest for the trees at best, and have malicious reasons for it at worst; if it is a sign of bad things to come, then you have/will have way more important quality issues to critique (as you do in this video, for instance)

Good post, just subbed. Interested to watch some of your wargaming stuff too. As a DnD player/GM since 2nd edition, I have to say that 3rd and 4th edition had a lot to recommend them. My overall favourite has to be 3/3.5. Great artwork, darker than 5e. Since the whole OGL debacle, I'm not giving Wizards/Hasbro any more of my money, and have been delving instead into third party content and OSR resources like Basic Fantasy RPG/Old School Essentials and Swords and Wizardry. That said, play what gives you happiness. One thought I had that I thought you might mention was them pushing towards playing on VTT as opposed to sitting round a table. I prefer the table to online, but think WotC is pushing VTT items as a sweetener for pre-orders.

Drinking a potion is an action and always will be in my games. Some of these little changes are the worst.

If I got it right, the books come out months apart, so what do you get if you get it a little earlier? The players can go through the Players Handbook, while the GM has to wait for his books? What are you going to do? Have your DM play it with you without him having the Dungeon Master's Guide? Or more importantly, without the Monster Manual? I mean sure, I have seen it done in earlier editions and other TTRPG's and it can be done, but it can be hard and often isn't much fun for the DM. And I don't think you will attract many new people being the DM for the new edition. At least not until the other books are out. So is pre-ordering really that important? Especially if you add the possible buyer's remorse to it?

4th ed also ended 3rd party content. which when WoTC only put out 3 or 4 books a year made it a dead game. No real innovations or 3rd party goodness to carry WoTC's plain vanilla goo

If you like 4th edition, you should check out Horde Wars: Basic. It plays like 4e, but manages to be speed up combat significantly. It's on DTRPG.

WOTC wants D&D to a be a lifestyle brand not something for their core audience. Hence why they immediately fucked up things with the boon that was BG3.

Sounds like a whole lot more power creep, for already over powered characters.

Weapon mastery was also a part of BECMI back in the '80s. More complex back then, with scaling properties and traits, different bonuses vs different enemies, etc. But it is something that's been part of D&D for decades.

More 5e is fixed, closer it gets to 4e.
