We did the surgery with our cat and recovery is horrible. He is miserable with drain and cone for 4 weeks. We have to squeeze the fluid out regularly. He seemed much happier with his swollen ear. And the fluid draining goes everywhere when he shakes his head. Now there’s a clog in the tube. I wish we had left his ear alone but I was worried about it getting infected or popping. But apparently the blood just clots and absorbs over long time.

For sake of clarification, in what way are you using the term 'correction'? A broken blood vessel is causing the hematoma. Without addressing that vessel, there is no correction. If at any time blood is allowed to be released from the ear either through a purposeful wound or drain, then there is no correction. Applying pressure corrects the broken blood vessels, not allowing it to continue to bleed. Although this technique is taught in University DVM training, it is outdated and extreme and very invasive. The patient is left to be cared for by the pet owner in an attempt to control the surgeons wounding and lack of addressing the cause. If the DVM is truly interested in healing the aural hematoma, then the DVM should use a splint. An AURAL SPLINT performs the 2 most basic needs for recovery and correction, applying back pressure against broken blood vessels and holding tissue in close proximity. 2 weeks is sufficient to permanently heal the ear damages.

This is a great demo! I will, however, take issue with the "tip" given at about 2 minutes & 38 seconds into the video. At that point, you tell us "you want the flat part of the needle to go against the horse." I am going to respectfully disagree. In IM injections, the rotation of the needle bevel makes comparatively little difference because the needle usually enters more or less perpendicular to the skin. In IV and SubQ injections, the needle is generally inserted on a slant. The "flat side" of the needle is also the OPEN side of the needle. Further, it is not just the "tip" of the needle that is sharp. If you look closely at the needle end, you will see, at the "rear" part of the bevel, that the barrel of the needle is also struck-off at an angle. If you put the open side of a needle against the skin and "drag" it across the surface -- particularly in a direction that has this sharp "following edge" pointed forward, you are essentially using a "micro-curette" to propel a sample of the horse's skin -- and any foreign matter sitting on the skin's surface - straight into the injection site. Yes, there is some evidence that "bevel down" is less painful; but, with a quick stroke, that difference is miniscule. Meanwhile, given the modern tendency to NOT clean and disinfect the injection site prior to needle insertion, the problem is only magnified. With horses and cows and other critters that "live with dirt," it is not so much swabbing for antiseptic purposes as it is to take "a layer of crud off" before penetrating the skin. (Ironically, omitting the "swabbing" step is more common in the veterinary world -- where patients tend to be covered in hair and often have dust, dirt, and feces on their skin -- than it is in the human world where you are more apt to find patients washing to "make themselves presentable" before visiting their health care provider.) Bottom Line: if you take the position that a needle might "push something noxious through the skin" the odds of that happening are proportional to the surface area of the needle and skin interaction zone; turning the bevel towards the skin increases the size of that zone by a factor of four to five times (4-5X) and the odds of an adverse event go up proportionately. Again, the overall demo was excellent! Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and skill! --LP--
