I actually did a wide body entry for my 2nd year cub scout competition around 1977 or so. It wasn't based off any design other than smooth curve, just the fact that it might be more aerodynamic and less drag hitting the wheels. It was the only year I didn't win a race, but did win best design category. Not sure why it wasn't fast though. Still have all my cars, including the widebody.
@laddsgarage
@laddsgarage 5 ай бұрын
I only have 2 out of the 4 that only used the widebody design that I don't pull out of the box to race with. This is my second one that I have added to the top and width, so this is still experimental for me on this type of design

What a cool idea... a Wide Body Pinewood Derby car!! 👍🏼😎 This video brought back memories. I built my first Pinewood Derby car about 1959. It was a very simple style based on Indy car designs of that time. I remember polishing the axles by hand with valve lapping compound. Polishing the holes in "tires" with VERY fine grit sandpaper rolled up into an axle size tube & inserted into tire hole and rotated until smooth. Lubed with graphite. Weight was added by screwing the metal part of an old Nifty brand magnetic close notebook toward the front. Then behind that I shot several BB's into the underside all the way to the back. About 3/4 to 4/5 of the BB would penetrate the wood... just leaving a small portion above the wood. I covered them all with Elmers Glue just to make sure they stayed in. (That was probably unnessary. 😉🤣) I came in 2nd place. Thanks for the memories brother... 👍🏼💜😎

@@laddsgarage Glad to share it my friend. Thank you for spurring the memories with this video. 👍🏼 I remember my Daddy helped me shape the general car shape & then he made me take it from there. Of course if I had question about what to do he would tell me what or how to do it. BUT... I was the one that did it. 😉 I'll have to hunt that car up, it seems like the axles attached different. There was not "axle grooves" in the block. I think there were slots front & back where you glued in a piece of wood with the axle grooves in it. Best I remember this put the tires out away from the body (kinda like a Formula 1 car) BUT.... I'll find the car & see if my memory is correct on that. 😉

Right back at you 😜 Pinewood building is one of my favorite things to look forward to each year with the Cub Scouts. I put a lot of research in it when my oldest was still in Cub Scouts, and everything still works. The biggest difference is these wide and tall body's are harder to make aerodynamic with the way I hollow the bottom.
@chaspruitt2610
@chaspruitt2610 5 ай бұрын
@@laddsgarage Thank you!! 🌲 That's neat that you still do this!! Do you cover the "hollowed out part" with something?? It seems a heavy paper (maybe cardstock) cut to size & glued over the "hollowed out area" would flatten it out & restore the aerodynamics of a flat underside (bottom). BUT.... you have probably already done that or something similar. 👍🏼😉

Not a bad looking vehicle. Strange about flat zero compression though. Reckon #4 piston has a hole in the top of it?? That might also explain the excessive oil on the plug. I had that happen once in a VW motor... no dropped valve, no nothing. Just a hole in the piston that appeared it was burned there. (???) No compression in that cylinder though.. it was flat Zero. Motor had about 215,000 on it. Of course the VW was air cooled & yours is not. Anyway, just a thought. 👍🏼 Good luck & keep us posted. PS... Looks like you have a good "helper" there. 😉

@@laddsgarage Since I am not overly acquainted with this particular motor and what has and has not been repaired or replaced in it. I will guess that the timing belt/chain has not been replaced. Honestly you can fire the absolute parts cannon trying to chase the EVAP issue... although I will agree that the manifold as well as associated leak are going the to be the major causes. If the o2 censor were bad they would simply give you an open circuit high low code. My suggestion would be if you intend to tinker with the motor, I might suggest "fixing" the current manifold issue. Ans after consulting the financial advisor and call local salvage yard for a block and rotating assembly and build something a bit spicier. The HHR is chevy's answer to the pt cruisier..cruiser... and share many of the same problems. Passengers do fair terribly well in any type of accident... I can attest to this, I am a retired paramedic and flightmedic and have seen the results personally... the car usually fairs better than the patient. To do the work this engine needs it truly needs to be pulled and then replace seals, gaskets, belts, etc and then put it back in, and await the next issue. If it runs currently reasonably well... aside from the wild goose chase codes that are present, I would build a new engine and swap them... which would give you a almost new motor and perhaps creat a spare from the current motor. The chassis looks to be in decent condition for its age and milage. If it were up here it would have rotted to the ground by now lol. Also before I forget, you can change the serp belt through the passenger wheel well and save yourself a whole lot of headache, really beat up knuckles, and time. I pray that you have a most blessed day.🙏💜
@laddsgarage
@laddsgarage 10 ай бұрын
It has kicked an upper O2 sensor code several times since I've had the exhaust work done a couple of years ago, so I'm probably safe to assume that the manifold has been cracked for a while, but the flex pipe being cracked is definitely a new issue. I honestly believe that the transmission will give up before the engine does, but I'm pretty hard on both. I've been looking for a manual HHR, but every one that I come across is pretty well ratted out.
@mayhemsmaster5050
@mayhemsmaster5050 10 ай бұрын
@@laddsgarageNo doubt that could be a potential reason. The manifold damage could have easily been damaged, and perhaps the majority of the issue, depending how hard they were on both beating and banging to "make everything fit". Depending on the condition... and if you can find one in decent shape, perhaps an S10 blazer may be an option, or if you can find a full size blazer. I don't where you live or how far you want to travel, but I would be happy to keep an eye out for one, both, or all three. Just give me a price point in what you are able to or want to spend.
