My one recommendation for anyone doing this job is that they should probably fill up the coolant and make sure the car is running correctly in time before putting the bumper back on because if you happen to be off by a tooth it makes setting back up just a tad easier and less time wasted. Would also recommend taking the head/cover off and doing the cam chain tensioner while you are at it and just be in the habit of replacing those parts together every 60k miles or so. Overall this video plus "humblemechanics" 1.8t timing video together make the perfect video combo to do this job for anyone. Humble shows it from a pulled motor perspective but this video shows how to do it from an intact cars perspective which is how most people would do it. Nice strat with pulling the nose forward btw. Gonna have to remember that trick when I tackle this job during the summer

I don't see how you did that without having to disconnect the intercooler hose and lower radiator hose. Mine will not slide forward like that without taking those off

I like how you created more work space by not removing the front clip all together. I'm trying to put a new turbo on my A4. I think your method will prove to be most useful. Not unless you have an easier way to remove and install a turbo on a 1.8 t. Thank you.

The turbo on an A4 is easily accessible without removing the front of the car. I put a new turbo on mine last May and did it all without removing the front end. I know I'm responding to a year old comment but who knows this might be useful for someone. I did it all according to official Audi instructions (Elsawin).

An absolute pain in the ass. This car was a nightmare to work on when I had one in my experience. That was years ago and have since moved to a Toyota. I will never again own one of these ticking time bombs. Hard lesson learned.

I was also watching in hopes of seeing how to set up the belt tensioner.. Written instructions included in the belt kit are quite confusing, even for a Mechanic.

For everyone complaining about the timing belt tensioner, just pull the retainer pin. To my knowledge from working on the 1.8T for years, the stock tensioners are all automatic. Some folks opt to swap for a manual tensioner since the automatic tensioner failure was the primary cause of timing failures, but that was usually because people waited until 100K miles to change the timing components. If you are one of the folks that want to set up a manual tensioner, you probably already know how to do it.

Why did you take the bumper off? and remove a spark plug?and move the radiator? Lot of extra work. No info on the tensioner.....removing,setting....
@zacharyzooshorion

Is this a real question? How would you expect to do a timing job without removing the nose on an Audi? That's how you do it. Really an easy timing job compared to other models. .you have to pull off nose and hang AC and remove radiator and it's all right in front of you. His spark plug-TDC technique isn't necessary tho.

Good job! Great tricks like the draining thorugh the sensor or the radiator support locking. One question, does not the crankshaft have a mark that you can align with the block? It seems to me that the extension trick requires a very good visual skills. Thanks
@zacharyzooshorion
@zacharyzooshorion 4 жыл бұрын
Yes the crank also has a mark aligned with the line up top of it. Both marks will be aligned.
@79401Jeeper

Yes, there is a timing mark on the lower serpentine belt pulley on the crankshaft that lines up with a mark on the lower lower timing cover, but that Mark is kind a hard to find. It’s there though.
