I'd played squash at a pretty good standard for decades before I tried playing tennis. I've now played tennis for 3 years. My tennis ground strokes are absolutely terrible. In particular I've had to recreate my forehand swing from scratch for tennis. My natural squash swing on the forehand times the tennis ball just fine, it goes out of the centre of the racket, it goes six inches over the net, and it's still rising as it passes the baseline. In squash we hit the forehand up to 200 miles an hour. The natural timed forehand swing has a head speed vastly too fast to have any chance of the tennis ball staying in court. Also, tennis players find it natural to hit a ball after the top of the bounce, as it's descending. Squash players will never consciously wait for that, so the timing is very unnatural. Also, tennis players raise the racket, then go backwards, circling into the swing. Squash players swing forwards first, not backwards. In tennis, once the racket goes forwards from the high preparation, the only shot feasible is a slice (unless you are an elite tennis player). It is extremely difficult to suppress the instinct to swing forwards if you've trained that in squash for decades. I'm not saying don't play both, but it's simply untrue that the mechanics of the swings are similar.

I grew up playing tennis with the old rackets, one handed backhand, flat swings and corresponding grip. I tried playing modern tennis but I did not enjoyed it - Roger Federer is one of the last players I relate to, and so was Ash Barty. I started playing squash earlier this year and I'm enjoying it. Squash is different to my old tennis but arguably closer than the new tennis is. The physics and body mechanics are universal, so little by little are adjusting my form to the proper squash form. It's fun. And thanks for sharing that Roger is also a squash fan!

I like the post it note for service practice but you should have used a different camera angle for the illustration. Anyway, thanks. I have found ( using a bouncy ball, because I ain't strong enough ) that a really good routine is to backwall boast ( straight if possible ), chase to the front and drive high so it come off the back wall when you now do the next backwall boast...... about 5 consecutive on each side is my usual limit.... you youngsters will do a lot more. ;-)
