For amateur wildlife photos, just when opportunities present themselves while I'm walking my dog in the river valley ... do I try to score a used mirrorless or DSLR .. or this suped up point-and-shoot ?

For me, I think the most insightful comment I've heard across many photography channels is the one you made about useability. If a lens isn't relatively easy to carry it doesn't make it out with me very often; it's relegated to a couple carefully planned outings a year. If I have to pixel peep to determine that the convenient-to-carry (not best but still pretty good) lens is a little soft in the corners, isn't the fastest glass, or maybe doesn't have the creamiest of bokeh, it's good enough to carry and use. I believe the vast majority of people you show its photos to will never notice a thing - only the pixel peepers will sneer after enlarging 100 percent. I've been debating buying the Z mount version of this lens against the Nikon 180-600 and am convinced that I am far more likely to carry and use the smaller and lighter Tamron than the larger and technically better Nikon; the extra 100mm reach of the Nikon is great but doesn't help if I'm not carrying it.

Heading to Tanzania for 3 months lots of wildlife an sceneries. I choose to purchase the P1000 since I am not a photographer. Mainly because I prefer capturing a lion/elephant/big 5 at 3000 mm vs up close. Incidentally I did capture the eclipse (first use of the camera) in Austin TX some shots awesome/some not. I asked for help learning the camera willing to pay $$$ for lessons but got nowhere. Resorted to KZfaq. If I was a professional photographer I agree this isn't the camera for us people who just want to capture an experience....well you'll have to wait until I return. Great review.

Great video i am just in the process of selling my D500 and all the lenses flashes and everything else i own and have to carry to down grade to a P1000 as i stuggle now to carry everything on a day out, I only take photos for my personal use with the occational print, and you have answered all my questions in one video. To put it in easy words the P1000 will fullfill all my needs . Also as you say there is some good editing software out there like Topaz along with many more. Thanks for the well explaind and very detailed video also subscribed.

Only now have I seen your video, three years later. In fact, the D6 is Nikon's final Pro DSLR model, a farewell product. And I'm into pro cameras D3s, D4s, D5 and so on. But the regular purchase prices are utopian for me as a passionate amateur photographer. I can and will only be able to afford it second hand. Therefore, the question of a mirrorless system does not arise for me when I have just put together my F-mount from used parts. For me it's not about chasing the latest technology, but rather about pure photography! It doesn't matter whether your fantastic photos were taken with D2xs or D6 or Z9. It's shocking to see how much money is spent! And the market is flooded with technical products that were wasted and no one wants them anymore. Does this make our world better?

First of all. A great well explained and presented video. BTW you should be a model. Many of the wildife shots were as good as or even better than I am currently getting from my Pentax K70 + 55-300 plm lens. Which as new is of a comparable price. Wether that is down to the equipment or the user or both I don't know (probably the latter). The only thing that puts me off if anything is I occasionally go to motorsport events, where the buffering and slow zoom and focus might be an issue. Certainly not having to carry a multitude of lenses around is a massive plus point and also not needing to change lens is also great. I still have a Fujifilm HS30exr which I was wondering how they compare in usability (apart from the obvious zoom capability). Any sensible views would be good.

I came from the Canon AE-1 Program world as was never so happy to jump to the digital world with the advent of IBIS and OIS to compensate for my shaky hands 😊 That being said, my son’s girlfriend uses a film camera. So question/comment. Is the resurgence of film applicable mostly to a younger demographic and Do does film still have a commercial application ?

Day before yesterday, I went to Lake Crescent in the Olympic National Park and took some digital photos as I walked along Barnes Creek and the Barnes Point loop trail by the lake. Lake Crescent is close enough to where I live that I can visit season after season, year after year, decade after decade. I came home and compared the digital photos I took that day to photos I took at the same locations on my Nikon F2, FM, and EL2 film cameras from 26 to 37 years ago. (Surprisingly, not much has changed at these locations, only subtle changes). True, the old Nikkor lenses aren't as sharp as today's technical masterpieces, but the old photos have an enchanting, dream-like quality. The First Nations people called this lake "The Lake of a Thousand Moods". For me, it's also The Lake of a Thousand Memories, with the times I went there with friends and family, some of whom have since passed away. These old photos wonderfully enhance my memories. I miss the old Kodachrome 25 which is no longer available, but I'll take along a film camera the next time I visit the lake. What do you recommend for a good color negative film stock?
@LeighAndRaymond
@LeighAndRaymond 7 күн бұрын
Wow - thank you for sharing that! I want to get up to Olympic so badly. For color, I just loaded a roll of Kodak UltraMax 400 into my FM3a but I am looking into other film stock too - things that are maybe a little off-beat, like Harman Phoenix. :)

I love my film cameras. I have an extensive collection of Olympus, dating back to 1951. And I love using rangefinders most of all. Sadly, after being an avid photographer, a period out of work means that I have many undeveloped films, and that's a massive disincentive to shoot more. This video may be the incentive I need to make solid plans to clear my backlog, and get back to basics! Thanks yet again, Leigh.
@LeighAndRaymond
@LeighAndRaymond 7 күн бұрын
Film can be pricey between the film itself and the developing. I do have a few videos coming up where I do digital photography projects that feel and sometimes look like film photography. I think it's a good in-between for folks that don't want to or can't shoot film. :)

It would work well, but, if you are doing video. There is zoom lens motor noise so you'll need to buy an external mic to remove that. Going all the way out to 3000mm, you'll need a steady tripod that can handle the weight.

I had the same injury in the same place (L5) in the 1990’s. After a series of relatively minor surgical interventions and occupational therapy I was as normal as I could get. But I did end up selling a lot of my heavier camera gear; plus I don’t carry as much anymore. That spot in my back is still my weakest link and the first to tell me it’s time to quit for the day. I recommend regular massage therapy; the Rubs Massage in Chandler and Gilbert are great.

Wonderful video! You have a great energy and gentle way of communicating that is refreshing from all the salesmanship and influencing of today's world. I am using the Adams book 400 Photographs as my inspiration, making notes and trying the the ideas he expressed so magnificently in his images. Social media is not the place to see great photos, maybe just a place to excite your eyeballs. I appreciate you used the 50 to make the project to give us normal views rather than super wide saturated photos. I've been thinking about returning to Leica in digital form after having an M3 and M4-2 so many years ago. Retirement gives time for thinking and stillness.
