Fortuitous timing on this video. I think I may have spotted a giant hogweed in flower on a towpath in outer London last weekend. If I can identify it properly next time I'm up there (probably this coming weekend) I can report it and get it removed before it sets seed.

I used to work on a golf course 20 year's ago and we had to use strimmers to keep the weeds down in the summer. I was always covered in blisters. The head groundsman said I must have been allergic to something. I proved him wrong after other groundsmen started to get the same blisters. Amazing what a bit of knowledge can do. 👍

Do both species of hogweed hybridize with each other commonly? Atomic Shrimp showcased a strange specimen a while ago (plant identification app video, around 7 minutes and 10 seconds in) which was exceptionally tall for common hogweed, but didn't quite look like giant hogweed.

Just wanted to let people know, ~The Blisters can last longer than 5years!! I got burnt by Giant Hogweed in my Late Teens, ~ I'm almost 60 years now. Since then, every time I allow Sunshine on my skin, the painful Blisters reappear!! Seriously it's a nasty plant, but I'm glad to see that people are learning more about it now!! That explains it. We have this stuff everywhere in Yorkshire and I thought it was Elderflower, so I went up to it, picked it and smelled it. Then later that night I had the biggest head ache and lost hearing in one of my ears for a few hours.

The toxins in giant hogweed inhibit your skins ability to protect against UV rays, which is what causes the blisters. Basically, you are getting second degree burns because of it. This and hemlock are two plants I’ve taught my eldest about in great depth.

When I was a kid there was an alert to all the local schools one summer because some kids got severe burns from the sap (it was a very hot summer which apparently made it more potent than usual). Shame they don't teach this stuff in schools. Might have saved those kids from a nasty experience.

An interesting Fact,,,(*Depending, I suppose!!) Those Wild Strawberries are a New Wild Variety!! The Wild Strawberries we used to pick, have a less rounded fruit. Rather than the more pointed berry, , like the Wild Alpine Strawberry,,, which were very sweet, creamy and much sweeter-smelling,,, than this New Wild Strawberry!! We used to pick the Original, Wild strawberries along the old disused railway tracks, dry, sndy soil. but these rounded fruits are now more common and apparently an unexpected new type, nd can grow in long grass, with much damper conditions. Possibly theyre due to cross-breeding with garden varieties, although not quite s nice,,, ~ they still taste better than them bought from the Supermarkets though!! If I can find the link,to the article later, Ill leave it here. ...XxX...

Do ribwort plantains go really bitter once they're slightly past their best? The ones in my garden started flowering several weeks ago, I just found out they're edible (and that they're not a type of grass, I tried them both raw and cooked, and they're not good. Maybe they would've been lovely a few weeks ago? Or does it just take a while for my palate to adjust to new foods that are significantly different from anything I've had before? Never mind taste. The texture is not good. It's tough and hairy. I feel like I'm chewing on a rat's tail. I know I have sensory issues, but I didn't realise some people tolerate textures THAT bad. I don't think I'm likely to try these again.
